Subject outline

Introduction to Sports Commentary develops and expands students skills in a specialised area of sports journalism, sports broadcasting and sports commentary. At the successful completion of this subject, students will have an understanding of the history of sports commentary in Australia and around the world. Students will be able to demonstrate an understanding of the different techniques and styles commentators employ, and be able to prepare and perform live sports commentary. They will also develop skills in other forms of sports broadcasting, such as live crosses, and developing and delivering sports podcasts targeted for a particular audience. This subject delivers targeted discipline specific skills, such as writing for broadcast, and how to use voice effectively for various broadcast mediums.

Lectures, tutorial activities. Sports commentary profile assessment. This assessment helps student to think about the wider context of sports broadcasting.

02. Identify the key elements of successful live sports broadcasting, and apply them to a live cross that is of industry standard.

Activities:
Lectures, tutorial activities and live cross assessment. Students will be given a news conference, must come up with a newsworthy angle and deliver a live broadcast cross.

04. Identify the key elements of successful match commentary, an apply them to a live match commentary that is of industry standard.

Activities:
Lectures, tutorial activities and live commentary assessment. Students work within small teams, taking on specialist roles such as lead commentator and host, specialist commentator or play by play, boundary commentator - to call a live sports match.

05. Identify the key elements of a successful sport podcasts, and develop and deliver an innovative sports podcast that meets its audience.

Activities:
Students work within small groups to deliver a sports podcast. They must come up with a concept that is different to others currently on the market, and deliver an industry standard show that includes multiple segments.
