About the Medical imaging specialisation
Build the fundamental knowledge and skills required to care for patients in medical imaging and radiology practice contexts.
Gain specialised skills in complex patient management and nursing practice related to technologies such as x-ray, computed tomography (CT), ultrasound and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Develop critical thinking and problem-solving skills, specialised clinical proficiency, and effective communication skills. Learn how to plan, implement and evaluate medical imaging practice and make independent judgements while working effectively as a member of a multidisciplinary team.

Entry requirements and pathways
Academic entry requirement
Prerequisites
Applicants must be a Division 1 Registered Nurse and hold a current practising certificate with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA). This does not apply to International applicants.
Applicants for the clinical specialisations and pathways must be registered with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA) and employed in the relevant clinical specialist area or an approved agency, or have applied to the agency to undertake your clinical placement at the time of applying for the course. In the latter case, an offer into the course will be conditional upon confirmation of the clinical placement. Applicants with a relevant Graduate Certificate or Graduate Diploma do not need to provide a workplace statement outlining clinical placement approval.
Clinical specialisations and pathways are not available to international applicants.
Successful completion of a recognised Nursing degree (equivalent to an Australian Bachelors degree).
Selection criteria
Applicants with an Australian bachelor degree (or equivalent) in a cognate discipline or related area will receive credit of up to 60 credit points.
The following subjects will be credited as advanced standing for cognate students:

Applicants with an Australian Postgraduate degree (or equivalent) or an Australian Honours degree (or equivalent) in a cognate discipline or related area may be eligible to receive credit of up to 120 credit points, including the subjects listed above.
Applicants with over 2 years of relevant work experience may be eligible to receive credit of up to 60 credit points

Note: Meeting minimum prerequisites does not guarantee an offer of a place. Entry into all La Trobe courses is based on competitive selection and there may be limited places available.

Credit for previous study (advanced standing)
Credit for previous study (advanced standing) is the recognition of prior study or learning that can be counted towards a qualification. This can reduce the number of subjects required to complete your course. The amount of credit received depends on the level and relevance of your previous study and the number of subjects completed.
The University will designate courses where there is only admission into Year 1 of the course. In these cases, there is limited credit. See list of limited entry courses.

To qualify for the award of Master of Nursing, students must complete a total of 240 credit points across 2 years.
Specialisation is a 60cp intensive focus on an specific area of advanced nursing practice.
Learning Pathway is a 120cp breadth focus that provides the learner with decision-making skills to improve health service delivery.
International applicants:
International applicants can only enrol into the Non-Clinical Specialisations, which include, Leadership, Health Management & Public Health.
International applicants can chose from one of the Learning Pathways including, Research, Project and Education and management (students undertaking the Leadership specialisation cannot undertake the Education and management pathway).
Mid year intake:
Clinical Specialisations and Clinical Learning Pathways are only available to start year intake students.
Year 1 requires the completion of 120 credit pointsA credit point is a unit of measurement to indicate the relative study load of subjects, courses, majors, minors, specialisations and other academic items.

Work-Based Learning
Compulsory placements (Work Based Learning)
During this course, you will participate in one or more supervised Work Based Learning (WBL) placements designed to allow you to practice newly acquired skills, behaviours and knowledge while integrating theory with practice. The placements will immerse you in professional work culture, enabling you to develop and further enhance your skills. WBL provides you with the opportunity to gain valuable industry experience at one or more of our local, interstate or international industry partners or agencies. WBL placements will generally be arranged by the Placements Operation Team or Experiential Learning Team at La Trobe University. The number of hours undertaken can vary considerably, depending on the requirements of the course. Students may incur additional costs and it may be necessary to travel or relocate to complete a specific placement. Please refer to the individual subject entries for more information.
