Accepting an offer

Congratulations on being offered a place at La Trobe University. Here's how you can accept or defer your offer.

Before accepting your offer, you should read the Letter of Offer carefully and meet any conditions mentioned.

You should also read the University policy on the Refund of Tuition Fees.

How to accept your offer

  • Meet any conditions in your Letter of Offer

If your offer is conditional, you must meet all listed conditions before you can accept and enrol.

    • If you applied directly: required documents are to be uploaded via the Documents tab in the application portal.
    • If you applied via an agent: your agent can help submit required documents on your behalf. Once all conditions are met, we’ll be able to finalise your acceptance.

If your offer has no conditions, you can proceed to accept your offer.

    Sponsored students

If your studies are to be sponsored by an overseas government, organisation or company, you will be required to submit a valid Financial Guarantee letter from your sponsor confirming coverage of tuition fees, OSHC or other related expenses at the time of accepting your offer. You can find additional information on the Sponsored Students page.

    Study Abroad and Exchange students

Applicants who have received an offer for a Study Abroad or Exchange program must complete Table A - Study Program Proposed Subjects on the Offer Acceptance Form and include four selected subjects (per semester) for enrolment. You must choose from the approved subjects on your Letter Offer.

    Under 18 students

If you will be under 18 years of age at the time of course commencement, your Letter of Offer will be conditional on having suitable guardian/carer arrangements in place as required by the Department of Home Affairs (DHA).

For all applicants under 18 (direct or via an agent):

    • Complete the Offer Acceptance Form (attached to the Letter of Offer) and have a parent or approved guardian sign the form.
      • For direct applicants: this form should be uploaded when accepting your offer.
      • For applicants with an agent: your agent can help submit this form on your behalf.

    Students with disabilities

If you think you may require support for your study at La Trobe, it’s important to contact Accessibility and Inclusion before you accept your offer. This helps the university determine your eligibility for services.

  • Make payment

Your Letter of Offer contains information on annual indicative tuition fees. Once you’ve accepted your offer, you can make payments via the International Online Application System.

The online portal is a secure service that allows you to make your tuition fees and OSHC payments. You can use VISA/Mastercard, CIBC, Convera or Flywire (in your local currency, where available).

For more information on how to make your payment, please see our guides:

    Payments for sponsored students

    • If your financial guarantee covers all fees listed in your offer, no further payment is required.
    • If your sponsorship does not cover all tuition fees and/or Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC) for any family members included on your visa:
      • You will need to request a new offer.
      • Once the revised offer letter is issued, you must pay any outstanding amount listed.

The sooner you are able to make the necessary payment(s), the faster you will receive your Confirmation of Enrolment (CoE), which will help you apply for your student visa.

  • Lodge your student visa application

Once you’ve accepted your offer submitted your documentation and made payment, we will issue your Confirmation of Enrolment (CoE). This will enable you to apply for a student visa. We will also send you further pre-departure and enrolment information.

After accepting your offer, it's important you read our guides on preparing to arrive in Australia and what to do once you’ve arrived.

Understanding conditional offers

In some cases, students may receive a conditional offer. This means you must fulfil one or more conditions before being granted a firm offer. These conditions could be:

If English language conditions apply to your offer, you must send evidence of meeting the course’s English Language Requirement before or when you accept your offer. For more information about English language requirements, see our page covering language requirements.

If academic conditions apply to your offer, you must provide original or certified copies of all academic transcripts to the Admissions team. You can do this via the application portal prior to arrival or during registration at the university.

If you are eligible for credit for previous studies, this will be reflected in your Letter of Offer. You can search for indicative credit on the La Trobe Credit page.

If you didn’t request assessment for credit when you submitted your application, you can still apply for credit by lodging an application. You need to do this before teaching begins for the subjects that would be covered by your credit.

Please note: if the duration of your course changes, you must notify the Department of Home Affairs. This includes if you receive credit after your student visa has been granted.

All universities are required by the Department of Home Affairs to review all applicants who intend to apply for a student visa against Genuine Student requirements. This review can include an assessment of your study plan and financial capacity to meet living and study costs while in Australia.

Defer your offer

If you need to defer the commencement of your course, you should:

Please note, you must meet all requirements for the new intake in order for the deferral to be approved.

  • Submit your request

Submit your request through the online application portal by clicking the 'Defer Offer' button.

  • Provide required documentation

Provide any required documentation and evidence to support your request.

Once your request has been reviewed, our International Admissions team will provide a new Letter of Offer and/or Confirmation of Enrolment.

Important Information about deferring your offer

In most cases, you can defer the commencement of your course for a maximum of two semesters, or one year.

If you have accepted your offer and your student visa has been granted, deferring your course may affect your visa.

Deferrals for Graduate Research students

If you've received an offer for a research degree, a deferral may affect the availability of academic supervision and any scholarships awarded. Your deferral may need to be approved by the Board of Graduate Research.

For more information, please email international.GRS@latrobe.edu.au.

FAQs

Depending on your course, you may have the option to defer your offer for up to one year. This means we’ll hold a place for you to enrol in your course the following semester or year.

Deferment is open to most students: Coursework or research, international students are able to request to defer, though not all courses can be deferred. International students on a student visa can only defer subject to conditions outlined in the National Code.

As an international student visa holder, you may be eligible to transfer to another La Trobe course. Find out more about transferring to another course.

Transferring into a different course may affect your visa. The Department of Home Affairs will automatically be notified of the changes to your enrolment.

If your visa is valid for the duration of the new course, you don't need to apply for a visa extension.

You need to apply for a new visa if:

  • your visa does not cover the entire duration of the new course
  • you are intending to transfer to a course at a lower AQF level (for example, from a Bachelor Degree to a Diploma, or Masters to Bachelor Degree).

You need to ensure your passport is valid at all times while studying in Australia, and that you meet visa conditions at all times.

Please contact International Operations and Compliance and the Department of Home Affairs before making the change.

If you apply for a course transfer and are granted Advanced Standing, the course duration will be based on the number of credit points required to complete the course.

We recommend that you explore all your options before you decide to discontinue your studies. Find out more at withdrawing from your course.

Yes, you can. Your course duration will include any approved Advanced Standing (credit from your previous studies). Advanced Standing may reduce the number of subjects you need to do to successfully complete your course and potentially reduce the number of semesters you need to complete.
