Your general conduct responsibilities

Understand what’s expected of you to contribute to a respectful and inclusive La Trobe community where everyone can participate fully.

You’re expected to comply with community and legal standards of behaviour towards other students and staff. This includes participating in a respectful, safe and inclusive learning community and respecting University grounds and facilities.

The Student Behaviours Policy outlines the specific standards of behaviour expected of you as a student.

If you don’t follow the Student Behaviours Policy, you may face disciplinary action under the General Misconduct Statute, referral to another University process or, in serious cases, an external agency.

Treat others with respect

You must treat other students, staff and members of the La Trobe community with dignity, courtesy and respect – both in person and online.

You must not engage in unacceptable behaviour, including discrimination, harassment, sexual harm, bullying or hazing, violence, intimidation or threats of violence, vilification or victimisation.

Behave responsibly online

You’re responsible for what you post and share online, including on social media. Think carefully about how your online activity could affect other people and make sure it meets University requirements and the law. Don’t make comments or posts that suggest you are speaking on behalf of, or representing, La Trobe University.

Look after your health and safety

You're responsible for protecting your own health and safety and not jeopardising that of others.

You must not attend campus or take part in work or study, including online, while impaired by alcohol or drugs. You must also not become impaired while on campus or in a university work or study environment.

If prescription or over-the-counter medication could affect your ability to work or study safely, talk to the Accessibility team or your teaching staff about any adjustments you may need.

If you have a legal order in place that may affect your safety or interactions on campus, notify Safer Community and campus security so they can discuss support and appropriate safety measures with you.

Complete the Respectful Behaviour and Culture module

You must complete the Respectful Behaviour and Culture module during your first study period. It helps you understand your rights and responsibilities and how you can contribute to a safe, respectful and inclusive La Trobe community.

Report concerns about behaviour

The General Misconduct Statute and Student Conduct Management Policy set out how student misconduct is managed at La Trobe.

If you experience or witness concerning, threatening, inappropriate or uncomfortable behaviour, Safer Community can provide free and confidential support, advice and information about your options.
