Two students from the La Trobe Business School have served as delegates at the Humanitarian Affairs Asia 3rd Global Peace Summit in Thailand.

The Summit brought together 350 youth delegates from 47 nations to learn from world-leading peace activists and become champions in the advancement of a more peaceful, inclusive and sustainable world.

Ethan Mulligan, a student in La Trobe’s Bachelor of Business degree, says being a delegate at the Summit was “a wonderful opportunity and an invaluable experience.”

“We got to hear from a range of speakers – from genocide survivors to refugee rights activists – who shared their personal struggles of peace in their home countries and how they have taken action towards creating positive change,” says Ethan.

“The Summit gave me a much deeper understanding of global peace and conflicts, and how we might promote and foster peace in our own countries.”

Salma Salaat, a student in La Trobe’s Bachelor of Commerce/Biomedicine degree, says her experience as delegate and a peace ambassador was “nothing short of life changing.”

“Each session at the Summit left an indelible mark on me, with speakers sharing experiences that transcended borders and illuminated the path towards peace,” she says.

“In particular, I gained peace-building techniques that I have added to my arsenal of practical tools for bringing opposing sides to the negotiation table – but all of the lessons I learned have shaped me in a profound way.”

“The Summit ignited a belief within me that I too can contribute to positive change. I hope to make a meaningful difference in the world by starting a social enterprise in the refugee camp where I was born.”

“The School sees it as central pillar of its social mission to support its students to engage extra curricula activities and events as part of creating well rounded and impactful graduates,” says Dean of the La Trobe Business School, Professor Aron O’Cass.

"I want to see our students understand their place in the world and help them navigate a challenging global landscape to help change business thinking and practice.”
