Hellers, manufacturing leaders, empowered by student placements

La Trobe University student Tharindu Ranpati Dewage exemplifies the future of manufacturing engineering – where theory meets practice, innovation thrives, and collaboration paves the way for excellence. No wonder Hellers Ltd is happy to have him, all thanks to the University's Work Integrated Learning Program.

In the ever-evolving landscape of manufacturing engineering, La Trobe University student Tharindu Ranpati Dewage emerges as an innovator – not only an asset to the Hellers Ltd team for his academic talent but also for the tangible benefits he brings to the company.

As he approaches the culmination of his Master of Engineering (Manufacturing) degree at La Trobe, Tharindu’s journey is marked by determination, hands-on experience, and a commitment to pushing the boundaries of what’s possible.

Tharindu’s trajectory took an exciting turn when he secured an Engineering Work Integrated Learning (WIL) placement at Hellers. He joined the company in January 2024, following the successful placement of another La Trobe engineering student, Uday Nakka.

The University-led WIL initiative connects students with industry partners, allowing them to gain hands-on experience during a six-to-12-month student work placement while completing their studies. For his placement, Tharindu will complete up to 800 hours of work within the Hellers factory in Bendigo.

For Hellers, this collaboration translates into several key benefits.

Tharindu’s presence injects new ideas and perspectives into Hellers’ operations. His academic background and appetite for innovation invigorate the workplace.

Additionally, by hosting Tharindu, Hellers stays on top of the latest manufacturing advancements. The company is kept informed of cutting-edge techniques and advancements, ensuring it remains at the forefront of industry practices.

Shane Green, Workplace Training Coordinator at Hellers, acknowledges the significance of the partnership.

“Recruiting good people is difficult,” says Green.

“Building a strong relationship with La Trobe University allows us to tap into fresh, enthusiastic minds. Tharindu and his peers are advancing rapidly, and their work impresses us. We’re invested in kick-starting their careers.”

Tharindu’s research focus lies in High-Pressure Processing (HPP), a technique that extends the shelf life of meat products. His access to the HPP machine within Hellers is not just vital for his study; it also enhances Hellers’ capabilities. The company gains a deeper understanding of HPP’s potential applications, positioning them as leaders in food preservation.

“You’re able to apply what you’ve learnt at university to real life situations and also use the practical side to help understand theoretical concepts,” he says.

Tharindu Ranpati Dewage exemplifies the future of manufacturing engineering – where theory meets practice, innovation thrives, and collaboration paves the way for excellence.

Hellers stands as a testament to the symbiotic relationship between academia and industry, where mutual growth and shared success propel both forward.
