Racism and acts of racism
Racism is when an individual or organisation discriminates, excludes or disadvantages a person because of their race, colour, descent, nationality, ethnicity, religion or immigrant status.
Racism can be conscious or unconscious, active or passive, obvious or subtle, and it can take many forms. This includes:
- Jokes, slurs or nicknames targeting race or ethnicity
- Teasing or exclusion based on cultural background
- Offensive images, emails or messages
- Unfair treatment or practices that disadvantage individuals because of race
Our commitment
La Trobe University condemns all forms of racism and prejudice. We are committed to creating an inclusive, respectful, safe and equitable community where racism is not tolerated.
Acts of racism are a serious breach of La Trobe policy and may result in formal disciplinary action. This applies to both staff and students.
Report it
If you see or experience racist behaviour – report it to Safer Community.
