Background

The closing date for applications is 30 September for international applicants and 31 October for Australian and New Zealand citizens and Australian Permanent Residents.

Successful applicants must be available to commence their degree between 1 February and 30 June, 2021, at a La Trobe University campus.

Two doctoral research scholarships in alcohol epidemiology and public health are to be awarded to outstanding candidates to undertake research aimed at understanding harm from others’ drinking in Australia.

These prestigious scholarships, established by La Trobe University associated with an Australian Research Council Linkage grant, will be awarded to outstanding applicants who are interested in exploring harms from others’ drinking using epidemiological survey methods, statistical analyses of response agency data, health economics and in-depth interviews.

Scholarship #1 will focus on estimating the extent and cost of harm experienced from others’ drinking nationally using and developing their epidemiological and health economics skills.

Scholarship #2 is a survey and mixed-methods doctoral research studying the harm experienced from others’ drinking in families and among respondents in different relationships with drinkers.

These scholarships are competitively awarded and selection is based on academic merit and suitability to the selected project.

As an applicant you should have an interest in public health, quantitative and/or qualitative methods, and health economics. An interest in international health is desirable. Your project will address a range of potential problems linked to the drinking of others, including family violence, car crashes and more subtle impacts on relationships and roles.

Benefits of the scholarship include:

  • a stipend for up to three and a half (3.5) years, with a value of $28,092 per annum (2020 rate)
  • a tuition fee scholarship for up to four (4) years. Successful domestic applicants will be awarded an RTP Fees Offset scholarship and successful international applicants will be awarded a La Trobe Full Fee Research Scholarship (LTUFFRS) unless another tuition support scholarship exists.
  • Relocation allowance and publication/thesis allowance or RTP Allowance
  • Opportunities to work with La Trobe’s outstanding researchers, and have access to our suite of professional development programs
