Graduate Research Scholarships: Available projects

The Graduate Research School has a range of PhD scholarships available for specific research projects or themes as listed below. Successful scholarship applicants will receive a stipend, tuition fee scholarship and allowances. How to apply

If you wish to apply for a graduate research scholarship to undertake one of these projects, please make sure to:

  • review the scholarship eligibility requirements
  • review details on how to apply for candidature
  • select a project from the list of available projects or research themes
  • contact the nominated contact person for your preferred project via the email address listed under the relevant project details to obtain their in-principle agreement for you to apply
  • complete a Research Statement Form for your nominated project (only one project can be nominated)
  • check the project requirements for any additional special conditions or information that needs to be included in your application
  • complete your application for admission into La Trobe’s PhD program
  • a research proposal is not required unless specifically requested, as long as your Research Statement is submitted with your application
  • domestics applicants, submit your application to the La Trobe Graduate Research School (admissions.grs@latrobe.edu.au) by 30 April 2021
  • international applicants, submit your application via the International Online Application System by 31 March 2021

Your application cannot be accepted without the completed Research Statement Form and without in-principle agreement for you to apply from the nominated contact of the research project.

Medicinal Agriculture Scholarships

In addition to these projects, we also have a number of doctoral scholarship for research projects available through the ARC Research Hub for Medicinal Agriculture. Please note that these scholarships are restricted to Australian and New Zealand Citizens and Australian permanent residents.

Olivia Newton-John Cancer Research Institute (LTU School of Cancer Medicine) Research Scholarships

We also are offering two doctoral scholarships for research projects through the Olivia Newton-John Cancer Research Institute (LTU School of Cancer Medicine).

La Trobe University – Sheffield Hallam University Joint PhD Program Scholarships

La Trobe University is offering a PhD scholarship for a student to undertake a joint PhD with Sheffield Hallam University, UK.

PhD Scholarships for La Trobe University Research Themes

La Trobe University has a proud history of conducting research to address pressing societal needs. Our researchers work in partnership with community groups, industry and government to create opportunities and address issues of local, national and international importance. Our research positively impacts the communities we serve.

Our goal is to use our areas of strength to undertake high-quality research focused on five priority areas linked to the United Nation’s Sustainable Development Goals.

A number of PhD scholarships are being offered in these areas of research.  These scholarships are only available to domestic applicants working on projects closely aligned to the Research Theme and working with a supervisor who does not have an alternative scholarship for a graduate research project available. These scholarships are restricted to Australian and New Zealand Citizens and Australian permanent residents.

Applicants will need to identify and contact a prospective supervisor to discuss project opportunities and obtain their in-principle agreement to apply. You can search for a suitable supervisor by browsing the research and training scholars at La Trobe and contact them directly through the contact details in their profile

In addition to the Research Statement form, in your application, please indicate the research theme name along with your proposed project title. You should include a copy of a research proposal, describing your proposed project, with your application.
The Research Themes are as follows:

Theme title: The production of quality foods and medicines

Description

This scholarship is focused on the goal of producing high-quality foods and medicines for improved health, reduced environmental impact and enhanced economies.

Theme title: The protection and restoration of vulnerable ecosystems

Description

This scholarship is focused on the goal of protecting and restoring vulnerable ecosystems and community resilience in the face of environmental and climate threat.

Theme title: A healthy, safe and equitable life course for everyone

Description

This scholarship is focused on the goal of establishing a healthy, safe and equitable life course for everyone.

Theme title: Understanding and preventing disease

Description

This scholarship is focused on the goal of applying discoveries in the fundamental sciences and developments in technology to understand and prevent disease – especially at the intersection of cancer, immunity, cardiovascular and infectious disease research.

Theme title: More just and equitable societies

Description

This scholarship is focused on the goal of establishing more just and equitable societies.
