Freshwater Ecosystems - Ovens River

What you'll learn
The field trip is centred on the Ovens River and will specifically address field techniques used to study aquatic and riparian (stream-side) communities, through team-based research combined with evening discussions and presentations. The field project will focus on the areas of: stream hydrology, water quality, macroinvertebrate communities, fish, and vegetation. The subject will also cover aspects of river management, in particular the role of flow regime control in achieving ecological outcomes.
This subject is an introduction to field research and will be suitable for aspiring park rangers, field ecologists and anyone interested in a career working in science and the environment.
Pre-trip and post-trip requirements
Pre-trip commitments will involve the successful completion of on-line background modules to assist in your understanding of the field project objectives.
Post field trip commitments will involve completion of a report based on the project work you have conducted.
Enrolment
- The subject has a quota based on academic performance in the previous year
- It is expected that students doing this subject will have completed 45 credit points of 2nd year science subjects. If this is not the case, you will need to seek an exemption from the Subject Co-ordinator.
- This subject is open to students on ALL campuses
- Apart from the field trip, other content will be delivered online.
Withdrawals
Students who withdraw from the subject after the specified cut-off date will not be refunded the accommodation component of the field trip.
