Has your degree at La Trobe prepared you well for the workplace?

Some of the key strengths I developed in my course are time management, critical thinking, computer programming techniques and logical designing. Overall the degree has provided me with a set of skills which I apply every day to solve real life problems.

Tell us a little about your work history

I currently work at Ashburner Francis Consulting Engineers. I predominantly work on building services design and some of my key duties include lighting design, power reticulation, security services, MATV and Energy efficiency assessment of a building, which includes thermal performance of the building structures dependent on climate zones within Australia.

The most exciting aspect of my career is being able to contribute to large scale projects. We often tend to forget how much detail is put into structures which we have come to appreciate. Two recent projects I have worked on are a 400 Man Camp design for Origin Energy in Queensland which included power distribution, cable reticulation and MATV, and the Kingaroy Hotel design and energy efficiency assessment which included unit light, power and security design and documentation. This also included restaurant and function area design , CCTV design and Audio Visual designing.

What are things you enjoy most about your job?

New challenges everyday, a never ending learning curve and being given full freedom at work for personal research and development.

What advice can you offer to current students?

As a student you may at times hear that studies undertaken at University have minimal impact on the type of job you land. You may also find that only parts of what you have learned will be applicable to your job. However, the La Trobe engineering degree is essential preparation for a competitive workplace environment, and enhances your critical thinking and problem solving ability. These skills are not only applicable to engineering tasks but are crucial to any successful career.
