This subject provides a general and practical introduction to information technology. Areas taught include: fundamental principles of computer operation, the main hardware components of the computer, data storage and retrieval, introduction to system software, introduction to data communications, computer networks, the Internet; operating systems, file management systems, security, introduction to information systems; application software modules: spreadsheets, database packages, the World Wide Web.

Graduate capabilities & intended learning outcomes
01. Identify and discuss the functions of the main hardware components of a computer.
- Activities:
- Multimedia presentation and online chapters from the prescribed textbook on the main hardware and software components of a computer. Self-paced online practical activities, quizzes and webinars will be used for the hardware and software components of a computer.
02. Identify the technology and specifications used to describe computer components and make informed choices about which device characteristics are required for a situation.
- Activities:
- Computer Power Learning Content and online chapters from the prescribed textbook. Self-paces practical activities from an external resource Test Out on computer components and device characteristics.
03. Analyse a simple problem and develop a spreadsheet to model the problem.
- Activities:
- Online chapters from the prescribed textbook and self-paced problems/exercises that will enhance the student's skills and knowledge to develop spreadsheets.
04. Design and construct basic web pages with HTML and style sheets.
- Activities:
- Computer Power Learning Content along with online-practical activities, discussion forums on creating and testing web pages.
05. Develop and interpret simple database tables, queries and reports.
- Activities:
- Computer Power Learning Content along with online-practical activities and webinars on using Microsoft Access database to create and modify tables, queries, forms and reports.
