Family Therapy Foundations is The Bouverie Centre’s re-imagined Introduction to Family Therapy drawing on decades of experience and welcoming diverse practitioners to the field of Family Therapy with an engaging, practice orientation to systems work.

Delivered across 4 workshop days, you will be introduced to the origins of systemic thinking, dive into conceptual developments, and explore contemporary applications to enhance the well-being of individuals, families and communities.

This live format is delivered by a group of Bouverie’s experienced Family Therapists, either in-person or live online. Your learning experience is enriched by complimentary access to our “FTF” eLearning package. You will have free access for 3 months following the completion of your course, allowing you to re-visit key topics and deepen your understanding as you practice.

Additionally, completion of Family Therapy Foundations grants you access to our complimentary Family Therapy Community of Practice; where you can join like-minded colleagues from across sectors to support your continued application of Family Therapy concepts, strengthening your family work skills and knowledge.

Workshop Style

Family Therapy Foundations is delivered in a dynamic workshop format that emphasises collaboration, reflection, and experiential learning.

Each day of training is delivered by two of Bouverie’s experienced Family Therapist trainers, guiding participants to engage in group discussions, live demonstrations, and structured activities designed to bring systemic concepts to life.

We aim to create a safe and inclusive space for practitioners to explore ideas, share insights, and apply new skills in real time. Whether attending in-person or online, learners benefit from a rich, practice-oriented experience that supports both personal growth and professional development in family work.


Community of Practice

Upon successful completion, you will receive a year’s free membership to The Bouverie Centre’s Family Therapy Community of Practice. This is an exclusive online forum every second month with one of our expert family therapists and an opportunity to ask questions live.

For organisations and large group bookings

Blended learning

We have created a blended learning modality especially for organisations seeking to train a staff group. It combines the self-paced online learning with two in-person or live-streamed workshop days.

The training days are delivered by two of Bouverie’s experienced family therapist/trainers and complement the self-paced content with an opportunity to put ideas into practice, ask questions of experienced practitioners, and consider applying concepts within your work context.

Participants access the training as a cohort, completing the online course work and live training days together.

On completion of this course, you will gain foundational knowledge of:

  • The origins and evolution of key family therapy concepts and practices
  • Contemporary family therapy and systemic thinking and applications to diverse practice settings and presentations
  • Core conceptual and practice skills of family therapy

Professionals interested in understanding family therapy and systemic thinking, and their applications to enhance outcomes for individuals and families. This includes health care and allied health practitioners, supervisors, and managers from a diversity of disciplines and settings.

This will be available for groups and large workforces.

Experienced Family Therapist trainer/s will support participants to deepen their engagement and learning through 2 full days of interactive learning. The 2 live workshop days are scheduled during participants completion of the eLearning modules aligning activities with their stage of progress.

Together the group will explore the conceptual frameworks and practical skills embedded in the course, emphasising small group work and practice-based activities. Staggered completion of the eLearning course is a pre-requisite.
