La Trobe University Research Equity Scholarships
Background
The Board of Graduate Research will award up to three (3) La Trobe University Research Equity Scholarships annually to graduate research candidates who are Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islanders, have a disability or who come from a low socio-economic background. Applicants must be an Australian or New Zealand citizen or Australian Permanent Resident.
These scholarships are available to undertake a research project on any topic aligned to La Trobe’s areas of research strength, subject the availability of supervision and research resources.
Applications for this scholarship round are now open and close on 31 October.
Successful applicants must be available to commence their degree between 1 February and 30 June, 2021, at a La Trobe University campus.
Applicants must complete the application form for research candidature and scholarship, and submit the required documentation including a 500 word submission outlining the socio-economic or other relevant factors that have hindered their studies in the qualifying degree. Applicants for the low socio-economic background category must provide supporting financial documentation which includes either a copy of their most recent tax return, a Centrelink statement of income, or the payslips for the last three months of employment for each member of their household. All submitted documentation will be treated confidentially.
Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islanders may also wish to apply for the Dennis McDermott Research Scholarship.

Benefits of the scholarship
- a stipend for up to three and a half (3.5 years) years for a doctoral research degree or 22 months for a Masters by research degree, with a value of $28,092 per annum (2020 rate)
- a Research Training Program (RTP) Fees Offset for up to four years for a doctoral degree or two years for a Masters by research.

Are you eligible to apply?
To be eligible to apply for this scholarship, applicants must:
- meet the entrance requirements for the proposed course
- not be receiving another scholarship greater than 75 per cent of the stipend rate for the same purpose
- be Australian or New Zealand citizens or Australian permanent residents
- be Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander, have a disability or come from a low socio-economic background.
In selecting successful applicants, we prioritise applications from candidates who:
- will be undertaking their research at a La Trobe University campus
- for doctoral research scholarships, have completed a Masters by Research or other significant body of research, such lead authorship of a research thesis or peer-reviewed publication, assessed at a La Trobe Masters by research standard of 70 or above
- for Masters by research scholarships, have attained the equivalent of at least a high honours 2A grade degree at an Australian university or equivalent from a recognised overseas university
How to apply

- Review details on how to apply for candidature
- Identify an appropriate supervisor via the La Trobe University website.
- When you have received in-principle agreement for supervision, complete your application for admission into your desired research degree, indicate you wish to be considered for this scholarship on the application and submit to the La Trobe Graduate Research School (admissions.grs@latrobe.edu.au) by 31 October 2020
- Make sure you include a 500-word statement outlining the socio-economic or other relevant factors that have hindered your studies.
- If you are applying for the low socio-economic background category, attach supporting financial documentation including either a copy of your most recent tax return, a Centrelink statement of income, or the payslips for the last three months of employment for each member of your household. This documentation will be treated confidentially.
