Overview

The Bouverie research team conducted a systematic review of family-inclusive approaches in the treatment of patients with a dual diagnosis (i.e., co-occurring mental health concerns and alcohol and drug-related problems). The review summarised the treatments’ impact on the underlying conditions as well as the impacts on the relational wellbeing of both clients and their families.

This is important given that the presence of two health conditions is particularly challenging for practitioners, families, and clients alike. Families play an essential role in providing care for people with a dual diagnosis, and do so while navigating the unique challenges that come with supporting and caring for an individual with more than one complex health condition. These situations create unique strains and pressures on the family system.

Key research highlights

  • This systematic review provides clear evidence for the positive impact of family-inclusive practices in dual diagnosis treatment.
  • Given differences in presentation complexity and family structure, adolescents with a dual diagnosis need different approaches from adults.
  • Earlier family intervention could prevent long-term harm and relationship breakdown, while shorter, online interventions could increase accessibility and engagement.
  • Further research is needed to examine the impacts of family-inclusive practices on family members other than the affected person.
