Adolescent Violence in the Home: Systemic Interventions with Families

An increase in referrals in relation to Adolescent Violence in the Home (AVITH) has been noted across the service sector. Practitioners often struggle to respond to families where the parent/carer feels powerless and the young person is struggling with numerous challenges.
This two-day workshop provides participants with:
- an understanding of the issue (AVITH), its determinants and the rationale for a family systems response
- a family-based response which fosters change in the young person and parent/carer, placing particular emphasis on enhancing the parent/child connection
- an overview of current Australian research on AVITH, detailed practice principles and opportunities to learn and practice key skills.
- theoretical frameworks that inform their practice including family systems, attachment theory, motivational interviewing, trauma-informed practice, dyadic developmental psychotherapy (DDP) and narrative therapy.
What will you learn?
On completion of this workshop, you will be able to:
- Identify the determinants which contribute to the use of violence by adolescents against parents/carers, with a particular emphasis on the experience of family violence
- Identify co-occurring issues including neurodiversity, alcohol, drug use and mental health challenges
- Develop skills in assessment and safety planning
- Demonstrate skills to enhance engagement in change with adolescents and parents/carers
- Learn and practice a model of intervention that is developmental, trauma-informed and relational

AVITH is relevant across a broad range of settings for practitioners seeking to build their confidence in working with young people who use violence and their parent/s or carers.
This may include family and youth services, youth mental health, alcohol and drug, private practitioners, disability services, child protection and youth justice.
Workshop style
The workshop is facilitated by a subject matter expert who guides participants through key theoretical and practical frameworks, ensuring a strong foundation in core concepts.
Participants engage in trainer-led demonstrations, case discussions, and role plays that emphasise practical intervention strategies, with a particular focus on safety planning, engagement, and emotional regulation.
Small group activities such as discussions, case studies, and roleplays are tailored to reflect participants’ specific work contexts, promoting relevance and peer learning.
