Student-centred Global MBA

Dr Alana Thomson, Senior Lecturer in Sports Management and Course Coordinator of the Global Masters in Business Administration, believes students should sit at the centre of learning

Meet Dr Alana Thomson, Senior Lecturer in Sports Management and Course Coordinator of the Global Masters in Business Administration.

“Our Global MBA is for students with limited business management experience who are keen to move up to the next level of leadership in their careers or move from technical roles into management positions,” she explains. “The course focuses on active learning experiences and authentic assessments to enhance the employability of graduates ready to move into management positions anywhere in the world.”

In her teaching, Dr Thomson adopts a student-centred philosophy.

“I focus on experiential learning and authentic assessment to develop critical thinkers and responsible leaders.”

“I'm also passionate about the La Trobe Business School's commitment to blended learning as this

approach helps us move away from a focus on teaching facts and figures, and instead facilitates the building of students' skills in research, critical and design thinking, preparing them with transferable skills for workplaces of the future.”

Dr Thomson returned to academia a few years ago after working in sports management, a decision she has not regretted.

“I wanted to return to academia to pursue my passion for teaching. Whilst it is not an easy endeavour, I like the challenge of designing curriculum and learning experiences to help students move towards an outcome.”

“The days I get to witness my students pull together different strands of information and hear their critical thinking in action, whether that's challenging accounts they see in the media or challenging their own preconceived ideas, these are the moments my heart sings and I look forward to seeing where these students go in their future careers.”
