Study with the Department of Microbiology, Anatomy, Physiology and Pharmacology
Each year, our academic staff teach over 3000 undergraduate students enrolled in La Trobe’s Science, Biomedicine, Biological Science and Allied Health courses.
Our contemporary, evidence-based approach focuses on practical skills and on preparing students for careers that are professionally rewarding and personally fulfilling.
Our graduates have pursued careers in government departments and agencies, hospitals, community health centres, rehabilitation centres, pharmaceutical and biotech companies, private healthcare organisations and research centres.

Student experience
Our students – regardless of their degree – get the best balance of practical skills and theoretical knowledge so that they can graduate with confidence.
We offer a dynamic, engaged and supportive learning environment where students are exposed to new technology and new thinking.
Many of our academic staff are internationally recognised experts, enabling them to go ‘beyond the textbooks’ to disseminate the latest findings from their fields. Others are specialists in education-focused research, allowing us to incorporate the latest technologies and best practices into our curriculum.

We ensure our students are well informed about the range of careers that are open to them when they graduate.
For example, La Trobe’s career development learning program, My Career, is embedded across our courses. This program teaches students how to proactively navigate the world of work with modules and resources on career exploration, social media tools, future careers research, interviews with professionals, building professional networks and articulation of employability skills.
The program received a 2021 Citation for Outstanding Contribution to Student Learning as part of the Australian Awards for University Teaching program.
