Has your degree at La Trobe prepared you well for the workplace?

La Trobe University’s Department of Electronic Engineering has always emphasised both the theoretical and practical aspects of engineering and a holistic view of engineering. I have found the staff to be passionate, dedicated and supportive at all times. They have provided mentoring and guidance but most importantly have provided a long lasting friendship. They have always supported me and many other students, even years after graduation.

Tell us a little about your work history

I started my career as a Biomedical Engineer with Parker Healthcare and the Royal Women’s Hospital in Melbourne.

Several years later I joined Datex-Ohmeda. My key responsibilities were the installation and maintenance of life support systems such as anaesthesia delivery systems, critical care ventilators and maternal infant care systems. In 2003 the company was acquired by GE Healthcare and I have been employed by GE for 13 years.

My current position in GE Energy is Customer Contracts Manager for Asia (excluding China). I am responsible for the development, negotiation and management of Product, License, Maintenance and Support contracts within the Asia region for the GE Digital Energy business.

I have travelled extensively both within Australia and New Zealand and to Japan, China, Malaysia, India, Taiwan, Korea, Singapore, Finland, Sweden, the United States and Canada. The interaction with people from different cultures has helped me develop both personally and professionally.

What advice can you offer to current students?

Ensure that you take a holistic approach in the development of your engineering career. In addition to your technical skills, learn about ethics, develop your communication skills, business skills, cultural awareness and global business perspective. These are all critical to your success in your career.
