Why La Trobe Swim School
The La Trobe Swim School operates in an intimate 5-lane, 25m indoor swimming pool heated between 30-31 degrees.
This environment perfectly equips our swim school community to achieve learning and progression no matter their age, ability or cultural background.
We pride ourselves on offering small class sizes with an evidence-based curriculum which focuses on both learn to swim and water safety.
Swimmers advance through levels once the skill criteria are achieved, with ongoing assessments throughout the term. Regular feedback is provided either by instructors or pool-deck duty managers to ensure the swimmer (and parent/guardian) remain informed with progress.
Infant Learn to Swim (12 months – 3 years)
This stage of Swim and Survive focuses on water familiarisation, enjoyment and development of skills required prior to independent participation.
Parents/guardians participate in the lesson, and will play an active role in teaching their child skills through play, such as:

- Entering/exiting the water
- Moving through the water by kicking and arm actions
- Submerging under water
- Bubbles and breathing preparation
Pre-school/School-age Learn to Swim (3+ years)

Key curriculum outcomes include:
- Safe entry and exit
- Floating, recovering and orienting the body independently
- Submersion and recovering independently
- Bubbles and breathing skills
- Development of swimming strokes
- Development of survival skills & knowledge
Adult Learn to Swim (16+ years)
La Trobe Swim School offers an inclusive and comprehensive adult learn to swim curriculum.
We take pride in welcoming adults of all abilities and backgrounds and recognise the importance of lowering barriers or stigma that participants often feel when first starting out.
We offer 4 levels to ensure adults are learning skills based on their ability and work closely with new participants to level accordingly.
- Adult Introduction: suitable for those with no prior experience or have some fear around water
- Adult Beginner: suitable for those who can float on front and back, submerge underwater and perform basic freestyle and/or backstroke
- Adult Intermediate: suitable for those who can swim up to 50m of basic freestyle/backstroke
- Adult Advanced: suitable for those who can swim 100m independently with freestyle/backstroke.
