Reducing Gender-based Violence (ReGEN)

The Reducing Gender-based Violence (ReGEN) research group aims to build a body of evidence for effective interventions to prevent and reduce the effects of gender-based violence, especially those that can be delivered in rural and regional health and social settings.
We acknowledge the importance of tailoring prevention and response intervention, such as working with victim-survivors from various communities to ensure our research addresses the needs of all victim-survivors of gender-based violence, including survivors of domestic, family and sexual violence.
The ReGEN team is led by Professor Leesa Hooker, Dr Jessica Ison, A/Professor Kirsty Forsdike and Felicity Young.
For all enquiries, please contact Felicity Young, the ReGEN Manager, at f.young@latrobe.edu.au.
About us
ReGEN leads the delivery of evidence-based projects that address the intersectional needs of the community in reducing Gender-based violence (GBV) in Australia and internationally. We are global leaders in the primary prevention of sexual violence, with a particular focus on the experiences of people living in regional and rural areas. Our research is pragmatic and applied, with an intersectional and strategic lens, working within a feminist framework. Our research spans primary, secondary and tertiary prevention of GBV in the following areas:
- GBV and healthcare service/community organisational responses
- GBV in regional and rural areas
- GBV in the LGBTQ+ community
- GBV in community sport
- GBV and the role of alcohol and other drugs
- GBV in low-middle-income countries
ReGEN is an interdisciplinary public health research team with expertise in various health and social settings. The team regularly collaborates with research centres and schools across La Trobe University, other Australian Universities, and industry and government partners to deliver quality research and inform practice and policy. Our team collaborates closely with international colleagues and research networks across the USA, Canada, the UK, Europe and New Zealand.
ReGEN Network
Gender-based violence is a public health and human rights issue affecting the health and well-being of everyone across the globe, and in particular, women and children. The ReGEN Network has been established to draw together the breadth of expertise across La Trobe University working on this important issue.
The ReGEN Network promotes collaboration and partnerships to advance innovative research, evaluation and knowledge translation of projects and programs that aim to reduce gender-based violence.

How we work with people with lived experience of gender-based violence
The ReGEN team strives to include and advocate for lived experience expertise to be embedded in our research.
ReGEN has a dedicated Think Tank of co-researchers with lived experience of gender-based violence who advise, collaborate and co-design research with the team across numerous projects.
