Understanding Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD): A free online seminar for the health and community sector
Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD) has gained increased recognition as a major health concern in Australia in recent years. The condition is characterised by learning, behavioural, memory, functional and physical impairments that are lifelong. FASD affects more Australians than Downs Syndrome, Spina Bifida and Cerebral Palsy combined, yet most professionals don’t feel equipped with the information they need to recognise or respond to it effectively.
This free webinar, sponsored by the La Trobe University Rural Health School, aimed to help health and community service professionals by providing a wide range of information on FASD. The webinar was held on 9 September, 2021. You can watch a recording of the seminar here.

2018 La Trobe University Research Week - Research Showcase
Watch Professor Christine Bigby together with Scott Sheppard (House with no Steps) and Cathy Gauci (Unisson Disability Services) discuss research impact at the 2018 La Trobe University Research Week - Research Showcase, Tuesday 28 August.
Professor Christine Bigby shared the impact of a program of research since 2000 about group homes. Many organisations have adopted the internationally recognised best practice known as 'Active Support', her research has identified the difficulties embedding this practice in service. Professor Bigby, Scott, Gail and Cathy will talk about the way they have used the research findings to drive changes to management of group homes. They will also consider the difference that open-access learning materials developed by the research team have made to accessibility of training for staff across the disability sector.
ABC Radio National Life Matters
Professor Christine Bigby and Chantelle Robards appeared on the ABC Radio National Life Matters program on Tuesday 27 March, 2018 at 9:06am. They discussed the progress of the NDIS, described as the biggest social policy reform in Australia since Medicare.
Professor Christine Bigby is Director of the Living with Disability Research Centre at La Trobe University.
Chantelle Robards was a speech pathologist and is now an advocate for allied health professionals in NSW who work with the NDIS.
La Trobe Bold Thinking Series - The NDIS 5 Years On
Hosted by respected broadcaster, journalist and writer Francis Leach, the first Bold Thinking Series lecture of 2018 took place on Wednesday 28 March, 2018 and included La Trobe University Disability specialists Professor Christine Bigby and Dr Jane Tracy, Paralympian, Dr Lisa Chaffey and The Australian’s Rick Morton to discuss and debate the NDIS and more. The Bold Thinking Series features a panel of La Trobe University academics in discussion with industry experts to share their bold thoughts and discoveries, and how they relate to modern society.
