Frequently asked questions
Below are some common question partners ask about engaging with La Trobe university. If you can’t find the information you need below, get in touch with one of our team.
How big is the Research and Innovation Precinct?
The Precinct covers 40 ha, is surrounded by native flora, abundant birdlife and a wildlife sanctuary, yet is situated only 30 min from the airport and CBD. The Precinct offers office suites, laboratory space and the option for new greenfield developments.
What does it mean to be a ‘Research and Innovation Precinct Partner’?
Co-located within the Research and Innovation Precinct or having a close working partnership with the Precinct, our Precinct Partners have access to globally renowned researchers, world-class facilities and infrastructure, a future workforce, networking events, and the vibrancy and facilities that a university campus provides.
How much does it cost to co-locate?
We provide competitively priced options for short-term and long-term leases. We cater for start-ups or corporates who need a ready-to-go office with meeting rooms and collaborative spaces; for larger companies wanting to build premises and facilities; and for organisations that want to partner with University researchers and access our specialised facilities.
Do I need to invest in research to be part of the Research and& Innovation Precinct?
Investment in research is not a prerequisite for co-location on campus, however, alignment with the University’s values and strategic direction is critical. We seek long-term, sustainable partnerships that deliver mutual benefit and therefore encourage our Precinct Partners to collaborate with our researchers to innovate, commercialise ideas and start up businesses. We also encourage partners to capitalise on the wealth of student and graduate talent at La Trobe to offer work-integrated placements, internships, industry-sponsored PhD programs and employment opportunities.
Can I access students for my future workforce?
Yes, our team will work with you to identify a suitable talent pipeline for your requirements. There are many mechanisms in place to access students for your workforce such as employment of students and graduates, Work Integrated Learning Placements (WIL), student projects, engagement with teaching and learning, and industry-sponsored PhD programs. Contact our team to discuss your requirements.
What type of companies are in the Precinct?
Our co-located partners range from small start-ups with 1-2 people to large multinationals who want all the benefits of co-locating within a university.
The Precinct offers a rich network of anchors, SMEs and small start-ups, which span entire industry value chains. Partners collaborate with each other and with researchers through research contracts and joint grants, through engagement with students and through network opportunities facilitated by our events, shared spaces and innovation programs.
I’m not based in Melbourne; can I still have a presence?
Yes, our co-working office enables organisations that are not based in Melbourne to have a presence within the Precinct and enjoy access to research and innovation facilities. We also have provision to act as a landing pad for international firms establishing themselves in Melbourne or firms who make regular but infrequent visits to Australia to pursue research and innovation activities.
Can I host an event at the Precinct?
Yes, we have a conference centre with a capacity for 70 guests and plenty of parking, as well as smaller meeting rooms for board and team meetings or workshops with small groups. We encourage our Precinct Partners to consider hosting events, seminars and workshops. There are on-site caterers available for your function requirements and the Precinct team are happy to help with promoting your event to industry partners and the University community.
Can I attend events at the Precinct?
Yes, as a Precinct Partner we encourage you to attend events at the precinct and will be in regular contact to tell you about upcoming opportunities.
