Training, resources and LGBTI ageing information
Val’s LGBTI Ageing & Aged Care provides a range of training opportunities and packages to assist aged care providers and services working with or supporting older people, to understand the experiences and needs of older lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans/gender diverse, intersex, plus (LGBTI+) people. The training aims to develop knowledge and commitment to provide LGBTI+ safe, welcoming and inclusive care.
Many older LGBTI+ people have lived through a history of profound discrimination, stigma and abuse. These experiences have not only impacted their health, wellbeing, and visibility, but for many have also created barriers to accessing health, care and support services as they age.
The awareness and inclusion training programs can provide a strong foundation for the development of key actions to reduce barriers to access and support the delivery of LGBTI+ rights-based, person-centred, trauma aware care in accordance with aged care sector requirements and standards.
The following training programs are provided:
Rainbows Don’t Fade with Age – LGBTI+ Ageing & Aged Care Training (half day or 2 x 2hr session – fee for service)
This training session will assist your organisation to build awareness about the experiences and needs of older LGBTI+ people and provide a stepping stone to understanding and implementing LGBTI+ inclusive, rights-based, person-centred, trauma-aware care. The training is appropriate for a range of staff and roles across the ageing and aged care sectors and includes interactive activities, presentations of LGBTI+ research/evidence-based information, related aged care requirements, policy and legislation, case studies, and facilitated discussion.
Val’s experienced trainers provide an environment for safe, accessible and open discussion to foster an understanding of the histories and experiences of older LGBTI+ people and how these may impact their confidence to access, and/or experience of aged care. Val’s trainers combine a range of lived and aged care experience, with knowledge of the different service delivery environments, care complexities, and the diversity of staff roles across the sector. We can assist staff and organisations to become LGBTI+ aware and provide a foundation for LGBTI+ inclusive actions (including aged care sector frameworks). This program has been developed by Val’s LGBTI Ageing and Aged Care, part of Rainbow Health Australia.
This training program can be delivered on-site/your location, or in a virtual setting (e.g. via Zoom, Teams or similar). In addition there is flexibility to deliver the training in 2 parts: Part 1: Foundations (LGBTI+ Awareness) and Part 2: Actions for LGBTI Inclusion.
