Student services

At La Trobe University Sydney, we want to give you every opportunity to succeed in your chosen field of study, and prepare for the next stage of your career.

From the first day that you join us, you have access to a support network of people who will help you get the most out of your time at university.

You'll study in a supportive and friendly environment that offers you assistance with academic support, and also personal and career support, to help set you on the pathway to success.

We encourage all students to take advantage of the services offered and to ask for help whenever you want it.

Our student mentors are here to help you develop your study skills conducting peer-tutoring sessions in areas such as accounting or marketing.

If you would like to arrange a time to meet with a student mentor or if you are interested in becoming a student mentor, please visit campus Reception for more details.

Our orientation buddies are second, third and fourth-year students who are here to help new students settle in to university life, provide campus tours and answer any questions students may have. You can meet an orientation buddy during the orientation and enrollment period at the beginning of each semester.

If you’re interested in volunteering as an Orientation Buddy, please visit campus Reception for more details.

Student counselling support is available upon request. Please visit Reception to ask for counselling support as soon as you feel anxious, or stressed, or homesick, or to just have a chat to our friendly team.

Internships

Internships are a great way to develop your workplace skills and can be facilitated with students, either as part of your studies (Work Integrated Learning) or during a vacation period. Internships are usually unpaid but the benefits to your career are significant and are worth much more than money in the long term.

Get the competitive advantage

An internship should help you develop your knowledge, skills, capabilities and confidence.

Internships enable you to put theory into practice in real-world settings, to work within a professional team, and to contribute to outcomes that help local organisations achieve their goals. The transferable skills you learn and your achievements also look great on your CV and help you to perform better in job interviews!

Please note that students are required to commit to co-sourcing internships and to conducting themselves professionally at all times. A successful internship can:

  • Significantly improve your ability to gain employment
  • Add value to your CV/resume with relevant work experience and real-world examples of your professional achievements
  • Assist you in developing communication and teamwork skills in the business environment
  • Deepen your understanding of the requirements and expectations of the industry and employers
  • Give you opportunities to make long-lasting professional connections within your industry and potentially referees for future jobs.

Who can participate?

Bachelor’s and master’s students are eligible for internships. Spaces are limited each year so you should apply promptly to be considered.

What type of work do interns do?

Students undertaking internships gain real industry experience, and the majority of the work they do as an intern is directly related to their field of study. This means students can be assured they won’t spend their weeks as a make-shift receptionist, cleaner or doing menial tasks.

Internship partners

La Trobe Sydney maintains relationships with mostly small and medium sized enterprises (SMEs) from across the technology and related sectors.

What else do I need to know?

There are more interested students than places, which means early action, active commitment and flexibility are key to landing an internship. Maintaining a positive and professional mindset is a must, as host companies need interns that add value to their teams from day one.

You will also need to put in the work because internships don't just happen, you make them happen with our support. Meeting all deadlines and being on time for all meetings and interviews is critically important - you only get one chance to make a great first impression.

Equally important is a clear understanding of the long-term career value you create for yourself by investing your time in an internship. Because most internships are unpaid, the financial rewards from the internship may not come immediately but over the course of their careers, graduates gain much more from a paid, professional internship undertaken as a student than from undertaking part-time work unrelated to their studies and career.

Visit campus Reception if you are interested in undertaking an internship, and our team will discuss the options, process and timelines with you.

As a Sydney Campus student you have access to the La Trobe Career Advantage Program, designed to help you actively prepare for your life beyond La Trobe.

You will get help with preparing your resume, getting ready for interviews and have access to a careers advisor to help plan your career.

For any information technology issues please go to Sydney campus Reception as your first point of contact.
