iThenticate

iThenticate is a web-based platform that compares text in uploaded documents with millions of items of existing scholarship and webpages to identify matching text. All La Trobe researchers can get access to iThenticate as part of the University’s suite of support for research integrity. Journal editors, publishers, and thesis examiners often use iThenticate or similar software to detect and deter plagiarism and self-plagiarism. Researchers can identify and address potential areas of concern from early in the writing process by using iThenticate themselves.

Using iThenticate can help you:

iThenticate does not:

  • compare text in different languages
  • match diagrams and tables
  • match images.

iThenticate does not save a copy of any file which is scanned to a database of sources (unlike Turnitin, similar software used in undergraduate teaching). It protects intellectual property while allowing researchers to identify errors in citation and attribution.

Planned Change & Outage

There is a forthcoming upgrade to iThenticate 2.0 - scheduled for Thursday 6th August from 3:00 pm - Friday 7th August 3:00 pm.

On this date, access to our current version of iThenticate will end. Please plan for 24 hours of downtime while our institution’s accounts, users and user groups, submissions, similarity reports, and folders are being transferred to the new version.

From 6th August, the current version of iThenticate will be disabled and all users will access past similarity reports and make future submissions via iThenticate 2.0. We will accept new registrations for the current iThenticate until 31st July. After this, all new users will be added to iThenticate 2.0 in August.

Look for a “Welcome to iThenticate” email
Active users (all those who have logged in at any point during the last two years) should receive a welcome email from noreply@turnitin.com inviting you to activate your new iThenticate 2.0 account once the migration has been completed (after 7th August, 2026).

Welcome email expiry
You will have 7 days to log in using the link in the welcome email.

Access to iThenticate 2.0 will be from a new URL
You will no longer be able to access iThenticate from the existing login. Embedded in the “Welcome to iThenticate” email should be La Trobe's new, dedicated URL, which will be: https://latrobe-ith.turnitin.com/
