Wildlife at La Trobe

Throughout the Wildlife Sanctuary’s 30 hectare site, a great diversity of plants and wildlife can be found.

A stroll around our wetlands will provide the budding or experienced bird watcher with a great experience. Tune in your ears at certain times of the year and you will hear numerous frog species calling. Our lizard lounges exhibit darting reptiles, while nesting boxes, and hollows, provide great habitat for arboreal birds and mammals. Spring and summer will reveal a pop of colour in the form of wildflowers throughout the various habitat types; and as the temperature drops and it starts to get wetter in autumn, an ever increasing diversity of fungi can be found.

There are over 500 species of indigenous plants and 355 native vertebrate species recorded in the Wildlife Sanctuary. The numbers of invertebrate species are poorly known, but there are likely to be many more species than the vertebrate species.

Many of the indigenous plant species are available for purchase through our indigenous plant nursery. We also have a handy search function to help you work out what species will be best suited to your garden!
