Background

This doctoral research scholarship is awarded to outstanding candidates to undertake research into the causes, treatment and prevention of cardiovascular disease.

These prestigious scholarships, established by La Trobe University in partnership with the Baker Heart and Diabetes Institute, will be awarded to outstanding applicants who are interested in pursuing research aimed at furthering our understanding of the causes of cardiovascular and metabolic diseases including hypertension, diabetes, atherosclerosis, heart failure and stroke.

The available projects are:
1. Targeting antioxidant and anti-inflammatory pathways to lessen diabetic cardiac complications
2. Understanding how oxidative stress and glucose metabolism interact in the diabetic heart
3. Repairing a broken heart: exosomes in cardiac regeneration
4. Lipid Annotation for more insightful analyses
5. Mining lipidomics data for biological insight
6. Leveraging high dimensionality in lipidomics for imputation, extrapolation & dataset reduction
7. Investigation of novel fibrotic and inflammatory pathways in cardiovascular diseases.
8. Targeting platelets as a novel anti-inflammatory and neuroprotective strategy for Multiple Sclerosis
9. Investigating the role of the inflammatory immune response in atherosclerotic plaque instability
10. Therapeutic potential of heparanase inhibitors in unstable atherosclerotic plaques

Applicants should have a high level of achievement, including a first class honours degree or equivalent.

  • a La Trobe Research Scholarship for three and a half years, with a value of $28,092.00 per annum, to support your living costs (2020 rate)

Are you eligible to apply?

To be eligible to apply for this scholarship, applicants must:

To be eligible, you will need one of the following:
- a graded Masters by research degree in a relevant discipline completed within the last ten years assessed at a La Trobe Masters by research standard of 70 or above; OR

- a Bachelors (Honours) degree, Masters by coursework or ungraded Masters by research degree completed within the last ten years where you achieved a weighted average mark of 70 or above across any coursework subjects; and

  • your degree includes a research thesis of 15,000-20,000 words; or
  • your degree includes a written research component comprising at least 3/8 of one year; or
  • you are the lead author of a peer-reviewed publication or other research published within the last ten years.

  2. review details on how to apply for a Doctor of Philosophy
  3. complete and submit your Doctor of Philosophy application by 20 December 2019, indicating you wish to be considered for the La Trobe University – Baker Institute Joint Scholarship Scheme
  4. you don’t need to submit a research proposal with your application; instead indicate which project you are applying for.

The University will carefully review your application and consider you for this scholarship. You will be advised of an outcome in February 2020.
