This scholarship, established by La Trobe University in partnership with Untapped Holdings, will be awarded to an outstanding applicant who is interested in exploring how to improve and support employment outcomes for Indigenous Australians who also identify as neurodivergent.

The successful applicant will receive academic supervision from the Olga Tennison Autism Research Centre (OTARC) and industry partner Untapped Holdings. The project will examine the employment experiences of Indigenous neurominorities working in supported employment initiatives in Australia.

As an applicant you should have a strong commitment to neuroinclusion and identity-safety.

Benefits of the scholarship

  • a Research Training Program (RTP) or La Trobe Research Scholarship (LTGRS) for three and a half years, with a value of $34,000 per annum, to support your living costs (2024 rate)
  • an additional industry partner stipend contribution of $16,000 per annum for three and a half years
  • access to a La Trobe Graduate Research Industry Engagement Allowance of $2,000
  • a fee-relief scholarship for up to four years
  • relocation allowance and publication/ thesis allowance
  • opportunities to work with outstanding researchers from La Trobe and OTARC, and have access to our suite of professional development programs.
  • candidates enrolled in the School of Psychology and Public Health may apply for up to an additional $4,000 for project related costs and up to $2,000 for conference travel costs during their candidature

Are you eligible to apply?

To be eligible to apply for this scholarship, applicants must:

  • meet the entrance requirements for the Doctor of Philosophy
  • not be receiving another scholarship greater than 75 per cent of the stipend rate for the same purpose
  • be an Australian citizen or Australian permanent resident

In selecting successful applicants, we prioritise applications from candidates who:

  • identify as neurodivergent
  • are of Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander origin
  • will be enrolled full-time and undertaking their research at a La Trobe University campus
  • have completed a Masters by Research or other significant body of research, such as an honours research thesis or lead authorship of a peer-reviewed publication, assessed at a La Trobe Masters by research standard of 75 or above

Once you have received in principle supervision agreement from Dr Jennifer Spoor, follow the steps to submit your full application for candidature and scholarship.

  • In the application, please include a brief research proposal and personal statement of up to 500 words outlining your unique strengths and qualities, why you would excel as a student, and illustrate how the scholarship could impact your academic endeavours
  • In the application, attach additional supporting documentation (if available)
  • In the application, select the 'La Trobe Industry Research Scholarship (LTIRS)' option when prompted and provide the scholarship code IND-24007

Selection process

The University will carefully review your application and consider you for this scholarship. The successful candidate will be made an offer for candidature and scholarship.

Applicants will be assessed on their academic record, research proposal, and personal statement. Applications will be considered on a case-by-case basis until a suitable candidate has been appointed.
