Key partnerships
Sheffield Hallam University
Sheffield Hallam University is a strategic partner with a range of joint programs activities across research and innovation, teaching and learning. Our collaborative research focuses on shared areas of research strength, seeking to improve public health and social care, physical activity levels and manufacturing productivity.
This partnership will be supported by a Joint PhD program enabling students to work seamlessly across both institutions and to graduate with a jointly awarded doctoral qualification.
IIT Kanpur – La Trobe University Research Academy
Established in February 2020, the Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur – La Trobe University Research Academy will address a diverse range of global challenges in health, food and water security, urban planning and transport, while training the next generation of research and industry leaders.
The Research Academy will be based in Kanpur, India, with the recruitment of joint academic staff and up to 40 students during the first two years who will be enrolled in a Joint PhD program.
Kyushu University
The Kyushu University Institute of Mathematics in Industry (IMI) operates a branch at La Trobe University. Through joint academic appointments and mobility opportunities for students this partnership addresses both curiosity-driven research and a range of interesting industry problems.
JSS Academy of Higher Education and Research
Our partnership with Jagadguru Sri Shivarathreeswara Academy of Higher Education and Research is focused on tackling global health issues including diabetes, cardiovascular disease and cancer.
Collaborative research projects are conducted at the state-of-the-art JSS University Hospital, an 1800 bed facility that caters for over 30,000 outpatients and 3500 inpatients per month, with La Trobe PhD students based in Mysuru, India, supported by a dedicated La Trobe India Graduate Research Scholarship.
Asian Smart Cities Research and Innovation Network
The Asian Smart Cities Research and Innovation Network (ASCRIN) is an interdisciplinary network situated at the confluence of academia, industry and government. The network aims to improve the sustainability, liveability and efficiency of cities in Asia through the utilisation of technology. ASCRIN was initiated by La Trobe University in partnership with the Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur and Birla Institute of Technology and Science, Pilani. From product development to product trial and evaluation, the Network works with research focused groups, government, global industry partners and start-ups to bring innovative ideas to life.

Tel Aviv University
In 2021, La Trobe was thrilled to announce three new cancer research projects, funded through a new international collaboration. The new collaborative research program was developed by the Research Centre for Molecular Cancer Prevention at La Trobe, in partnership with the Cancer Biology Research Center (CBRC) at Tel Aviv University and the Olivia Newton-John Cancer Research Institute.
The collaboration between the three institutions developed from a workshop in which scientists from the institutions identified areas where complementary research could drive significant breakthroughs in cancer prevention, diagnosis and therapy.
The innovative research projects address issues that impact the lives of cancer patients in Australia, Israel and the rest of the world. Read more about the partnership and the new projects here.
European X-ray Free Electron Laser Facility
The European X-ray Free Electron Laser (EuXFEL) is a $1.3B Euro, 3.4 km long, facility located near Hamburg which enables atomic scale images of molecules to be generated using X-ray diffraction. In 2017 La Trobe University were among the first ever users of the EuXFEL and since then they have led Australia in the international effort towards creating molecular movies of proteins, the fundamental building blocks of life.
A collaborative PhD program with EuXFEL enables La Trobe students access to this latest generation of molecular imaging facility and ensures that our students are trained in the latest techniques and gain the necessary skills to be future research leaders in molecular science.
