La Trobe reaffirms status as industry leader with FISU Healthy Campus recognition

La Trobe University’s standing as a nationwide leader in health and wellbeing has been confirmed by attaining yet another Australian-first achievement in the FISU Healthy Campus Program.

A year on from becoming the first Australian university to be awarded Platinum certification status in the FISU Healthy Campus Program, La Trobe has added another significant accomplishment by becoming the first university in the country to successfully complete the full FISU Healthy Campus audit whilst retaining its Platinum certification status.

Proposed and developed by the International University Sports Federation (FISU), the FISU Healthy Campus Program aims to improve all aspects of wellbeing for students and the campus community at large. The program aims to enhance students’ and the campus community’s wellbeing in domains such as healthy campus management, sport and physical activity, nutrition, disease prevention, mental and social health, risk behaviour and environment, sustainability and social responsibility.

Since joining the program in June 2022, La Trobe has showcased its industry leading activities across a comprehensive suite of organic food recycling systems, health and wellbeing services and net zero initiatives. With an overall average assessed criteria compliance score of 95%, including nominations for international best practice for 18 separate criteria assessed as part of the Healthy Campus audit, La Trobe is the only Australian university (and one of only 53 universities worldwide) to hold Platinum certification status.

La Trobe’s accomplishment was recognised at the recent UniSport Australia National Conference, where La Trobe Sport Senior Manager, Nick Lambert, accepted the official Healthy Campus certification on behalf of the university from FISU Secretary General and CEO, Matthias Remund.

Lambert said the FISU Healthy Campus recognition solidified La Trobe’s industry-leading commitment to fostering a healthy and sustainable lifestyle amongst its students and staff.

“La Trobe University prides itself on enabling an environment where physical activity, health and nutrition are a daily part of campus life, so to become the first Australian university to complete the full FISU Healthy Campus audit and retain our Platinum status certification is a significant achievement,” Lambert said.

“Achievements like this don’t happen without the collaboration between La Trobe Sport and many other departments within our university, who are all committed to maintaining and improving the health and wellbeing of our campus communities.”

The awarding of FISU Healthy Campus Platinum certification follows La Trobe’s rise to 12th overall worldwide in the Times Higher Education Impact Rankings 2024 for good health and wellbeing.
