Empowering students with augmented reality

Dr Stefan Schutt has co-authored a chapter in Creative Technologies Education on how Augmented Reality (AR) can empower students as designers.

“Lots of educators are talking about AR but there aren’t many teacher-focused articles that explore how students can create their own AR experiences,” he says. “We draw on case studies to show the benefits of design-based learning and offer practical tips for teachers.”

AR augments real life by overlaying digital content onto the real world. This is achieved through
camera and microphone-enabled digital devices that can combine real and virtual elements.

Dr Schutt says that AR has many benefits for student engagement.

“It can boost student motivation, collaboration and problem-solving. It also helps students understand abstract concepts.”

“The chapter also addresses challenges, including accessibility for students with special needs and teacher hesitation around unfamiliar technology,” he adds.
