A career change to the classroom

With the demand for new teachers set to skyrocket in coming years, there has never been a better time to make a career change to education.

At La Trobe, our postgraduate teaching courses help people looking to make the move to this rewarding career, equipping them with the practical skills they need to succeed in the classroom.

Here, we talk to some Master of Teaching students who’ve taken the leap.

Abie Abuacan, Master of Teaching (Secondary) (pictured)

Abie describes her first classroom experience as “striking gold”.

“As I spoke to my students about big social justice issues, I felt so fulfilled when they started questioning injustice and taking steps to stand up for equity. Knowing that I had inspired one child to become a better citizen was an amazing experience.”

She chose to study teaching through La Trobe’s Nexus program, an award-winning program that allows students to obtain a teaching qualification while getting practical classroom experience.

“Through the Nexus program, I feel empowered to help make the world a better place, by educating the world's children on social justice concepts that matter, one child at a time.”

ABM Hassanuzzaman, Master of Teaching (Primary)

After working in the health sector for many years, ABM Hassanuzzaman was looking for a change.

Since starting his course, ABM has undertaken placement at Yarrunga Primary School in Victoria’s northeast, an experience he says has given him great insight into teaching.

“Placement has been a great opportunity to get hands-on experience in teaching, putting all the theory I have learned into practice in the classroom. It is rejuvenating being around young people.”

“When I finish, I hope to be a dependable teacher for my future students and provide support to those students with disabilities or behavioural issues.”

“Through Nexus, I feel that I am finally part of a meaningful movement to inspire positive change in the world.”

Meriam Nedri, Master of Teaching (Primary)

Meriam was inspired to study education after seeing firsthand the important role that teachers play in supporting vulnerable children.

“I had spent several years working in the public sector, where I worked with vulnerable children and their families,” she says. “I observed the immense importance of school and the safety that school can provide for a child. This changed my perspective on the role of teachers and how much of an impact they can have on a child’s life.”

“Having already completed an undergraduate degree and honours in Psychology at La Trobe, I knew that going back would be the best decision for me to continue postgraduate study.”

Currently in her first year, Meriam will soon go on her first teaching placement.

“I’m excited and nervous to see how it goes! Everyone in my course is so helpful and friendly. I am excited to sink my teeth into the content and start learning.”
