The webinar event covered current challenges, future trends, and opportunities within the cyber field.
Opened by Dr Cerasela Tanasescu, Director, Innovation and Entrepreneurship, La Trobe University, Dr Leanne Ngo, Associate Professor and Coordinator of Online Programs in Computer Sciences & IT went on to facilitate a panel discussion on cybersecurity, entrepreneurship, employability, and the future of cyber start-ups.
The webinar featured a line-up of industry experts, including Annia Haggar, Founder, Cyber GC, who spoke of her passion for the evolving landscape in cybersecurity.
"I never know what the landscape is going to look like, and that's really exciting... We are in groundbreaking territory every time we do something," she said.
Alex Heidenreich, Executive Director SA and NT, CyberCX, went on to discuss the implications of AI in cybersecurity.
“I think AI will create an opportunity for a broader range of threat actors or criminals to understand more novel attacks”.
He pointed out that this same technology could help defenders enhance security measures.
Professor Abbas Krudati, Microsoft APAC Chief Cybersecurity Advisor and La Trobe Professor of Practice, emphasised that defenders could leverage similar technologies to counter threats. He mentioned that current vendor solutions already detect AI-generated malware, highlighting ongoing efforts in the industry.
Robert Neumann, a cyber talent specialist – and La Trobe alumni – shared his advice for aspiring cybersecurity professionals, stressing the importance of proactivity. He encouraged active participation, volunteering, and continuous learning. Professor Krudati echoed this sentiment, advocating for a growth mindset and ongoing education.
“Have a learning attitude, a growth mindset… your degree is good to start, but you need to keep up after the degree. It will get you your first job but won't keep you on the job if you don't continue to (build) on that (growth mindset)," said Professor Krudati.
The event concluded with an interactive Q&A session, where panellists addressed audience questions, providing valuable insights and guidance.
