Bavani Gunawardana is looking forward to connecting with fellow Law students in her new role as President of the La Trobe Law Students’ Association.
“Our primary goal is to support students and help them to get the most out of their university experience. We do this by facilitating social relationships and professional development, as well as advocating for student wellbeing,” she says.
“As President in 2024, I am privileged to have the opportunity to lead a team of 50 incredibly talented La Trobe Law students to deliver over 60 events and initiatives throughout the year."
“We kicked off the year with an O-Week law picnic, which was very well attended. It was great to see so many first-year students come along to learn about the support and opportunities available to them. We hope that this is only the beginning.”
“For the year ahead, some notable social events include the Law Camp, Law Cruise and Law Ball, as well as professional networking opportunities such as the Careers Connect Fair, Women in Law Breakfast and Careers Cocktail Night.”
“We also run legal competitions, create informative publications and host study sessions, but this is all just the tip of the iceberg! With our new Legally Speaking podcast up and running, and fresh ideas coming in, there is a lot to be excited about.”
Association Vice-President (Secretary), Eve Joyce, says there are plenty of opportunities to get involved and everybody is welcome.
“My advice to students is to get involved in everything you can. The La Trobe Law Students' Association has such a wide range of events and opportunities for professional development, from education seminars and mooting to firm presentations. It doesn’t really matter what year you are in; all these events are beneficial for your future career.”
“We hope to see as many law students get involved as possible and become members of the Association in the years to come!”
Established in 1992, the Law Students' Association is La Trobe's largest and most active discipline-based student organisation. It is widely regarded as the social and extracurricular hub for all Law students, including undergraduate and postgraduate students at our Melbourne and Bendigo Campuses, and Juris Doctor students at our City Campus.
