The Fashion World of Jean Paul Gaultier: From the Sidewalk to the Catwalk
At this exhibition celebrating the career of Jean Paul Gaultier, we invited visitors to rethink their identities.
While celebrating the identities created by Jean Paul Gaultier throughout his career, we invited gallery visitors to examine their own identities.
In 2014/2015, The Fashion World of Jean Paul Gaultier: From the Sidewalk to the Catwalk was the first exhibition in the world to focus exclusively on the playfully irreverent designs of Jean Paul Gaultier.
The exhibition featured more than 140 garments, including the first dress he created in 1971, costumes worn by Kylie Minogue and Beyonce, and haute couture dresses worn by Nicole Kidman.

During the exhibition, our annual summer art subject investigated the ideas behind Jean Paul Gaultier’s vision, and the ‘Colourful History of the Stripe’ lecture explored the historical, cultural and social significance of stripes and their place in creative expression.
Inspired by Jean Paul Gaultier’s exploration of identity through his work, we also created 1dentities, an interactive experience inviting visitors to NGV Friday Nights to define themselves using just one word.
Each participant received a printed postcard of their profile and chosen word, which was also shared in an online gallery.
