Where can Mathematics and Statistics take me?

A current shortage at national and international level means that mathematics and statistics graduates are highly sought after in the roles of medical statistician, financial analyst, meteorologist, mathematics teacher and sports statistician.

Mathematics and statistics play a crucial role in many areas of science including computer science and the life sciences. A major can help you prepare for a career in disciplines such as environmental science, genetics, biology and many more.

Statistics is used across a wide variety of careers, contributing to understanding through data analysis and forecasting, business modelling, data evaluation and risk assessment.

Professionals with statistics skills are valuable in areas such as scientific research, business management, insurance, management, manufacturing, economic analysis, marketing, health management and psychology.

Further study options

Majoring in mathematics or statistics allows you to pursue advanced undergraduate studies in mathematics, statistics or both mathematics and statistics.

An Honours degree gives you the chance to set your undergraduate qualification apart from other graduates and tailor your own learning to a specialisation of your choice.

How to apply

Apply through VTAC or UAC if you're a current Year 12 student or if you're applying to more than one institution. If you're not in Year 12 and applying only to La Trobe, you can apply direct.

VCE Units 3 and 4: a study score of at least 25 in English (EAL) or 20 in English other than EAL; and a study score of at least 20 in Maths (any).
