Addressing unwanted sexual behaviour in residential aged care services

The number of alleged or suspected unlawful sexual contact of residents in Australia nationally is reported to be as high as 50 incidents per week. However, the Royal Commission into Aged Care Quality and Safety identified gaps in training in several areas, including the management and prevention of sexual violence. Our workshop is part of Australia’s growing initiative to improve the safety and care of vulnerable residents.

About this workshop

This interactive, all day, face-to-face workshop aims to explore how we can improve the management and prevention of sexual violence in aged care.

The workshop is designed for nurses, managers, and healthcare professionals working in residential aged care, who are interested in gaining skills and insight into responding to incidents, survivors, and resident exhibitors of unwanted sexual behaviour. The workshop also explores how we can promote and support the consensual sexual expression of residents and discusses the complexities that arise when determining a resident’s cognitive capacity to consent to sexual activity. Guest expert speakers will also address other topics which may also include the role of the aged care regulator, police and sexual violence services. Guest topics and speakers are subject to change.

Presented by the Australian Centre for Evidence Based Aged Care (ACEBAC), La Trobe University, this novel workshop is facilitated by Professor Joseph Ibrahim with other experts and experienced leaders in the field of aged care practice and research. All participants receive a comprehensive electronic resource information pack which can be used to aid management and prevention of unwanted sexual behaviour in your facility.
