Community consultation

At Gabra Biik, Wurruwila Wutja, community consultation is central to our research - ensuring projects are guided by Indigenous voices, knowledges, and collaboration.
Community at the Centre, Consultation Matters
At Gabra Biik, Wurruwila Wutja, community consultation is not just a step in the process - it’s the foundation of everything we do. Our work is guided by the voices, knowledge, and priorities of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities, and always respects Indigenous data sovereignty. We ensure Indigenous people control how their data is collected, used, and shared.
Our research follows the AIATSIS Code of Ethics and is grounded in ongoing, meaningful community consultation. These foundations ensure our work remains respectful, community-led, and impactful.
- Consultation affirms the sovereignty of Indigenous people and their right to lead research that affects their lives, Countries, and cultures.
- Indigenous communities bring deep cultural knowledge and lived experience. Consultation ensures this informs our research and leads to culturally grounded outcomes.
- Consultation builds genuine partnerships and trust. This is especially important in addressing past exclusion and harm.
- When communities shape research from the start, outcomes are relevant and impactful.
