Malthouse brings leadership to Mildura

Renowned AFL coach Michael Malthouse shared insights into leadership and team building at events in Mildura yesterday.

Mr Malthouse was in Mildura as part of his role with La Trobe University as a Vice Chancellor’s Fellow. La Trobe offered the community the chance to hear from Mr Malthouse at a booked out event in La Trobe’s lecture theatre Wednesday evening.  Mr Malthouse shared insights on his life lessons in leadership that attendees could use in their everyday professional lives.

Prior to the evening event, Mr Malthouse took part in an intimate Q and A session with senior coaches and senior club staff of the Sunraysia Football Netball League.  The event was an initiative of La Trobe University’s ongoing partnership with the Sunraysia Football Netball League, which aims to strengthen retention of youth in the district by combining study and playing sport via strong community ties.

Dr Deb Neal, Head of Campus, said both events were a huge success and was thrilled to offer the district the opportunity with Michael,

“Michael’s experience in leadership and team building is something that can be taken into any aspect of business, sport and life. Because of Michael’s track record in this area, we had an overwhelming response from the community and completed booked out the event.  The audience was made up of a diverse range of community members, from business owners, to councillors, current students and La Trobe Alumni – so it was wonderful that they’ll be able to implement what they learnt from Michael in our local community.” Dr Neal said.

Ms Ros Milverton, President of the Sunraysia Football Netball League, said the league appreciated the chance to offer such a high calibre speaker to the senior coaches and club staff.

“To have such a celebrated AFL coach sit down with our senior coaches and staff was a real thrill.  It’s not often you get such an intimate opportunity with someone of Michael’s calibre.  I know the people that attended got a lot out of the event.  Our partnership with La Trobe University is very important to us, as we want more young people to stay in our district.  If we can combine that with them studying locally, it is a real win-win for both of us.” Ms Milverton said.
