Train to sustain: Helping national partners to implement SSFC

Our partnership with Tasmanian Department of Health in implementing family-inclusive practices by expanding clinicians' skills in working with families.

We’re partnering with the Tasmanian Department of Health (DoH) to implement family-inclusive practices by expanding clinicians' skills in working with families.

Key staff from the Tasmanian Department of Health have undertaken our Facilitation and Implementation Program (FIP) 2-day training for Single Session Family Consultation (SSFC). Subsequently, they delivered the training across Statewide Mental Health Service South – including the Continuing Care Team, Acute Care Team, Mental Health Hospital in The Home Team, and the Inpatient Unit service.

Initial training workshops have been well received, and scoping is underway for expansion across a Child and Youth Mental Health Service and the Eating Disorders Service.

Feedback from DoH clinicians running SSFC in practice:

“I am excited to share that I began ‘convening’ my first two SSFCs and these will take place in the coming two weeks. Both consumers were keen and didn’t hesitate!”

“Thanks for letting me attend the SSFC training, just wanted to report that I’ve just done my first real life SSFC. …I really think the structured approach and the promise of follow up calls made it very valuable for the family. Thank you for the tools to make this a good, empowering experience for the carer in particular.”

Feedback from the training sessions:

“Really enjoyed the in-person training and it consolidated my learning and got me thinking about different things”

“Good length, although role plays are challenging, they are a good learning opportunity”

What is the Facilitation and Implementation Program (FIP)?

Our Facilitation and Implementation Program (FIP) is a systemic adaptation of the “train the trainer” model, informed by implementation science, that aims to develop key staff who can facilitate training and support practice change within their organisation.

Benefits to organisations include:

  • Enhanced internal expertise within the organisation
  • Reduction in training costs
  • Increased knowledge retention for staff who are facilitating the training
