"I did my Work Integrated Learning Placement on a capstone project centred on designing a warehouse. This was a unique opportunity to apply my academic knowledge in a real industrial setting.”
“It also provided me with an important entry point into Australian work culture,” she says. “I enjoyed meeting and interacting with people from different backgrounds.”
Beyond placement, Tshering has embraced the valuable networking events and mentorship programs at La Trobe.
“I’ve also had the support of some truly encouraging subject coordinators whose guidance has been instrumental to my academic development,” she adds.
Tshering’s long-term goal was to gain hands-on experience working in an Australian construction company – a goal she is still working toward, but one that now feels within reach.
“I may not have achieved that goal just yet, but I’m proud to have crossed the first and often most challenging hurdle: securing a role in the industry even before graduating,” she says. “And what makes it even more meaningful is that it’s with a company whose values align with my own, and where I’m surrounded by a supportive, collaborative team.
Her advice for other postgraduate students?
“Postgraduate study is a big commitment, but it’s also a rewarding investment in yourself. Go into it with clear goals. Be open to learning not just from textbooks but also from peers, teachers and real-world experiences like placements.”
“Don’t be afraid to ask for support when you need it.”
