Students and staff from La Trobe Rural Health School recently came together to visit the Bendigo District Aboriginal Co-op (BDAC) for a day of learning and connection with local First Nations leaders.

The day began with a Smoking Ceremony and Welcome to Country, followed by sessions that showcased BDAC’s “garinga bupup” early childhood program and Djimbaya’s early years services.

Staff and students also learned about community engagement projects, youth leadership, and Indigenous employment programs.

Professor Carol McKinstry, Deputy Dean of Rural Health School highlighted the opportunities that can be gained from La Trobe University and BDAC working closely together.

“This partnership allows us to better meet the local needs of community as well as better education of students as future health professionals and teachers.”

Dr Scott Alterator, Director of Indigenous Futures, added: "BDAC is leading community engagement with passion and energy. We are led by their work in continuing to build a community-focused partnership.”

The visit formed part of the Billabongs Not Silos series, which this year celebrates strong partnerships and community-led innovation.
