Claudia’s journey to early childhood education

Bachelor of Early Childhood Education student, Claudia Condello, was inspired by her young cousins to pursue a career as an early childhood teacher.

Bachelor of Early Childhood Education student, Claudia Condello, was initially unsure of what career path to take after high school.

“I started a degree in biological sciences before realising it wasn’t the right fit and I couldn’t see myself finishing the degree. So, I deferred and took some time to self-reflect,” she says.

Thinking about her next move, Claudia asked herself what brought her the most joy in life. The answer? Her little cousins.

“I adored seeing their eyes light up when they saw me, how they would run towards me for a big cuddle, and how they would want to play and spend all their time with me. It always put the biggest smile on my face.”

“I wanted to try and capture that feeling every day, so becoming an early childhood teacher seemed like the natural career for me,” she says.

Claudia started with a Diploma in Early Childhood Education and Care before going on to do a Bachelor of Early Childhood Education with La Trobe.

“Starting with a diploma meant I had plenty of opportunities to work across various services and gain work experience. I was also able to keep working in the sector while completing my undergraduate degree online.”

For Claudia, the highlight of her course has been putting theory into practice in the classroom.

“I was very privileged to undertake my pre-service teacher placement at an excellent early childhood service in Broadmeadows. They pride themselves on their ability to build strong connections with the local community.”

“I thoroughly enjoyed participating in community outings, such as visits to the local nursing home and primary school, as well as the On Country bush kinder program.”

“Once I graduate, I would love to work as an early childhood teacher in both three- and four-year-old kindergarten. I also have a strong desire to undertake my own research and continue to build my knowledge as an early childhood teacher.”
