Bachelor of Visual Arts student, Eleanor Jones, has always been passionate about art.
“I wouldn't enjoy any life that wasn't centred on art. It has always been my favourite hobby and a skill that I take great pride in,” she says.
Eleanor was inspired to study visual art by her high school teacher, a La Trobe alumnus.
“I decided that I wanted to be a high school art teacher in Year 12, so I applied for the Bachelor of Visual Arts at La Trobe, which was recommended by my studio arts teacher.”
In addition to improving her existing skills, Eleanor says the course has expanded her artistic practice.
“My favourite subjects each semester have been the practical ones. I have loved learning new ways of creating and challenging myself to try something new,” she says. “I have learned how to convert my self-taught skills into a more structured practice. This has challenged me to be creative in new ways, which has been very rewarding.”
“I've also really enjoyed my literature electives. I've always loved to read, and these subjects have allowed me to see and appreciate literature in a new way.”
Eleanor has also taken inspiration from studying and living in Bendigo.
“I've enjoyed my time at the Bendigo campus. It is such a beautiful city with a wonderfully vibrant community. I love how much the city emphasises arts and culture, and I like that it feels like a mix of city and country.”
Eleanor will graduate this year and hopes to continue her studies with a Master of Teaching (Secondary) – following in the footsteps of her high school art teacher.
“Ultimately, I want to become an art teacher,” she says. “I hope I can have the same impact on kids as they had on me.”
“This career path is perfect for me as it contributes positively to the community, it matches my skills and personality and will allow me to continue my art practice in a meaningful way.”
