A new discussion paper from Olivia Sonneborn and Rachel Cardwell has examined the role of online learning in perioperative nursing education.
“The role of perioperative nurses has changed,” explains Ms Sonneborn. "Once viewed as support figures in the operating room, they now find themselves at the forefront of patient care – with the need to acquire specialised knowledge and surgical skills."
“Higher education has also undergone a transformation, focussing on online and blended learning. While it is more accessible and flexible, it can pose a challenge for the acquisition of hands-on surgical skills.”
Traditionally, surgical skills are taught in a nursing simulation lab with manikins, however the researchers note that this can be expensive and not always possible, especially in regional and remote areas.
Ms Sonneborn says that innovative approaches, such as homemade tools and readily available materials, are effective in supporting the development of surgical skills in the online environment.
“Despite the challenges, online learning can still offer an immersive learning experience and is effective in enhancing proficiency in surgical skills and ensuring patient safety.”
“On a practical level, readily available and cost-effective items can be used for practicing suturing and knots tying skills. Examples of materials that can be used include banana peels, synthetic foam, animal meat and commercial boards.”
“Student engagement strategies that incorporate visual, interactive and engaging learning approaches are also vital in online learning for perioperative nurses.”
Dr Cardwell says that online postgraduate nursing education is critical in driving excellence and innovation in surgical care.
“Through innovative approaches and effective engagement strategies, online learning can prepare perioperative nurses to navigate the complexities of surgical care with confidence.”
