La Trobe University English Language Proficiency Measures – country specific results, previous study in English and approved ELICOS programs

La Trobe recognises the English language proficiency demonstrated as resulting from measures other than internationally recognised test scores or the ELICOS and Foundation programs delivered by La Trobe College Australia.

Please note:

  • applicants are still required to meet the academic entry requirements for each course
  • some courses may require a higher level of English language proficiency and these are published on the website, so check your course for details
  • IELTS (General) is not accepted for admission into La Trobe university programs
  • where you have achieved more than one form of English language proficiency, only the most recent single achievement will be considered in the admission decision
  • applicants who qualify from a La Trobe program, and intend to gain professional registration to become a practitioner in Australia, may need to meet the relevant Professional Accrediting Agency’s English language registration standard
  • applicants must have satisfied accepted English proficiency tests above within the last two years before first enrolling at La Trobe
  • the University reserves the right to require that any applicant undergo a test of English language
  • where Exchange or Study Abroad applicants choose a combination of both undergraduate and postgraduate units, the higher English language proficiency standard is to be applied for admission purposes
  • any scenario that is not captured below will be assessed on a case-by-case basis.

Undergraduate

For students applying for undergraduate degree programs, undergraduate Study Abroad units, non-award study, single units and enabling programs where the minimum English language entry requirement is IELTS 6.0 with no band score less than 6.0.

  • Qualifications from an equivalent Senior Secondary program studied in an approved country where English is the primary language of instruction, and are not included above may also be considered, and will be assessed on a case-by-case basis.  A letter from the Principal or Registrar from the institution at which the applicant has studied must be submitted, confirming full-time study was conducted in English.
  • Time limitations apply to the age of the evidence used to demonstrate English language proficiency.  Time limitations means that the approved measures must have been completed within a specified number of years prior to the commencement date of the La Trobe University course. For Secondary programs completed in a La Trobe approved country where English is the first language, no time limitations apply.  For Secondary programs completed in a country where English in not the first language but is included in the table above, a two-year time limitation will apply.

Tertiary study (including TAFE/VET/Higher Education)

  • Successful completion of at least one year of full time study in Australia at AQF Certificate IV, Diploma, Advanced Diploma, or bachelor degree level, within two years of commencement at La Trobe.
  • Successful completion of at least two years of full time post-secondary study (or equivalent) in an approved English medium university from an approved English language speaking country, equivalent to at least 120 La Trobe credit points, within two years of commencement at La Trobe.

English speaking background or other schooling in English

Applicants who can provide evidence confirming they are citizens and passport holders in an approved English-speaking country, and completed at least four years of continuous schooling in an English medium institution, may meet the University’s English language standards. Applicants must provide a birth certificate or passport or arrival documents to confirm residency, along with secondary schooling or tertiary certificate and results and a reference or statement from the School/institution to confirm studies were taught entirely in English.

Where an applicant has also completed an approved Secondary Qualification listed in the table above, successful completion of this qualification, and achieving the required score will form the basis of determining English language proficiency.

Programs taught and regulated by English speaking countries, and delivered in countries not considered English speaking

Where an applicant has studied a tertiary level qualification, taught in a country where English is not the first language, but the program is delivered, regulated and administered by an institution from Australia, United Kingdom, United States of America, Canada or New Zealand, this may be accepted as meeting the English language proficiency standards.

Postgraduate

For students applying for postgraduate coursework and research degree programs, postgraduate Study Abroad units, non-award study, single units and enabling programs where the minimum English language entry requirement is IELTS 6.5 with no band score less than 6.0.

Tertiary study where English was the medium of instruction

  • Successful completion of at least one year of full time study in Australia at AQF bachelor or post-bachelor degree level (equivalent to 120 credit points study) within two years of commencement at La Trobe.
  • Applicants who can provide evidence confirming they have completed a minimum three year degree of continuous schooling (in an English medium institution, from an approved English-speaking country may meet the University’s English language standards.  Applicants must provide a certificate of completion and results and Reference or statement from the School/institution to confirm studies were taught entirely in English.  Students from the US, UK, Canada and New Zealand must have completed studies within three years of commencement at La Trobe, and other approved countries within two years of commencement.
  • India
    • Students who have graduated with a Bachelor’s Degree or higher from a Section 1 University (as recognized by AEI-NOOSR) from India applying for Postgraduate Business, Engineering and IT courses may meet English requirements if able to provide a verifiable letter from the University to confirm studies were taught entirely in English.
    • Students who have graduated with a Bachelor’s Degree or higher from a Section 2 University (as recognised by AEI-NOOSR) from India applying for Postgraduate Business, Engineering and IT courses may meet English requirements if able to provide a verifiable letter from the University to confirm studies were taught entirely in English, AND have obtained a minimum IELTS score of 6.5 bands overall with a 6.0 band in Writing, and an IELTS sub score in Reading, Listening and Speaking are 5.5 bands.

Programs taught and regulated by English speaking countries, and delivered in countries not considered English speaking

Where an applicant has studied a tertiary level qualification, taught in a country where English is not the first language, but the program is delivered, regulated and administered by an institution from Australia, United Kingdom, United States of America, Canada or New Zealand, this may be accepted as meeting the English language proficiency standards.

Postgraduate and Graduate Research programs requiring overall IELTS of 7.0 or higher:

  • Applicants who can provide evidence confirming they are citizens and passport holders of Australia, Canada, New Zealand, United States, United Kingdom or Republic of Ireland, and completed at least three years of continuous schooling in a degree or post-degree qualification with a minimum WAM of 60%, in an English-medium institution from one of these countries, may meet the University’s English language standards.
  • Applicants who qualify from a La Trobe program, and intend to gain professional registration to become a practitioner in Australia, may need to meet the relevant Professional Accrediting Agency’s English language registration standard.
