Each course at La Trobe University has a minimum English language requirement for entry.

Listed below are minimum requirements for Undergraduate and Postgraduate entry. Please use Course Finder to check your course requirements as some courses require a higher level of English language proficiency.

  • applicants are still required to meet the academic entry requirements for each course
  • some courses may require a higher level of English language proficiency and these are published on the website, so check your course for details
  • where you have achieved more than one form of English language proficiency, only the most recent single achievement will be considered in the admission decision
  • applicants who qualify from a La Trobe program, and intend to gain professional registration to become a practitioner in Australia, may need to meet the relevant Professional Accrediting Agency’s English language registration standard
  • the University reserves the right to require that any applicant undergo a test of English language
  • any scenario that is not captured below will be assessed on a case-by-case basis.
  • time limitations apply to the age of the evidence used to demonstrate English language proficiency.  Time limitations means that the approved measures must have been completed within a specified number of years prior to the commencement date of the La Trobe University course.

For students applying for undergraduate degree programs, undergraduate Study Abroad units, non-award study, single units, and enabling programs where the minimum English language entry requirement is IELTS 6.0 with no band score less than 6.0.

Please note: LTCA (and Australian equivalent) Foundation Studies scores and Australian Year 12 Secondary Studies English scores may be considered for undergraduate programs requiring higher English language standards, or approved exempted countries.

English speaking background or Tertiary study in English (including TAFE/VET/Higher Education)

  • Applicants from an English-speaking background or applicants who have completed the final four years of schooling in an approved English-speaking country:

Successful completion of at least one year of full time study in an Australian AQF Certificate IV, Diploma, Advanced Diploma, Bachelor’s degree level or higher, or an equivalent qualification from an approved English-speaking country.

  • Applicants from non-English speaking backgrounds:

Successful completion of at least one year of full time study in an Australian AQF Diploma, Advanced Diploma, Bachelor’s degree level or higher, or equivalent qualification from the US, UK, NZ, Canada, Republic of Ireland or South Africa.

  • English as the language of instruction from recognised European Countries:

Completion of at least one year full time studies (60 ECTS) at tertiary level from the following countries: Germany, Austria, Netherlands, Sweden, Norway, Finland, Denmark and Iceland.

  • Completion of a Bachelor’s degree from a Section 1 University in India:

For Undergraduate Business, Engineering and IT courses only, considered meeting English requirements if applicants are able to provide a verifiable letter from their previous institute to confirm studies were taught entirely in English and provide a tertiary certificate of completion and results for all semesters.

  • Completion of a Bachelor’s degree from a Section 2 University in India:

For Undergraduate Business, Engineering and IT courses only, considered meeting English requirements if applicants are able to provide a verifiable letter from their previous institute to confirm studies were taught entirely in English, provide a tertiary certificate of completion and results for all semesters.  In addition, applicant has a minimum IELTS score of 6.0 band overall with a 6.0 band in Writing and sub score of 5.5 in Reading, Listening and Speaking.

Programs taught and regulated by English speaking countries, and delivered in countries not considered English speaking

Where an applicant has studied a tertiary level qualification, taught in a country where English is not the first language, but the program is delivered, regulated and administered by an institution from Australia, United Kingdom, United States of America, Canada or New Zealand, this may be accepted as meeting the English language proficiency standards.

Postgraduate

For students applying for postgraduate coursework and research degree programs, postgraduate Study Abroad units, non-award study, single units and enabling programs where the minimum English language entry requirement is IELTS 6.5 with no band score less than 6.0.

English speaking background or Tertiary study in English (degree or post-degree)

  • Qualification from an English-speaking country:

Applicants who have completed Bachelor Degree studies or equivalent, or one year of full-time study at Postgraduate level in an approved English-speaking country.

  • English as the language of instruction from recognised European Countries:

Completion of at least one year full time studies (60 ECTS) at Bachelor’s degree or higher from the following countries: Germany (completion of DAAD at C1 level is also acceptable for PG entry), Austria, Netherlands, Sweden, Norway, Finland, Denmark and Iceland.

  • Completion of a Bachelor’s degree from a Section 1 University in India:

For Postgraduate Business, Engineering and IT courses only, considered meeting English requirements if applicants are able to provide a verifiable letter from their previous institute to confirm studies were taught entirely in English and provide a tertiary certificate of completion and results for all semesters.

Satisfactory completion of a preparatory English course not listed but is deemed equivalent to the appropriate ELICOS level at La Trobe College Australia, may be considered on a case-by-case basis. If any English test is a requirement of the program, students must also achieve the required results to demonstrate satisfactory completion.

English Language Exemptions

Applicants from the following countries who have undertaken and satisfactorily completed at least five years’ (full time equivalent) continuous education may be exempt from providing English language proficiency for all programs requiring minimum or above minimum English standards:

  • Republic of Ireland
  • Singapore (completed at least six years’ (full time equivalent) continuous education)

Where an applicant has also completed an approved Secondary Qualification listed in the Undergraduate section above, successful completion of this qualification, and achieving the required score at the equivalent IELTS level will form the basis of determining English language exemption.

Employment

Work experience may be considered on a case-by case basis to determine if English language standards have been met for Undergraduate programs (requiring IELTS 6.0/6.0 only) and Postgraduate programs (requiring IELTS 6.5/6.0 only). Documentary evidence must be provided showing completion of at least two years full time work experience undertaken in an English speaking professional work environment in Australia, New Zealand, UK, USA, Republic of Ireland, or Canada in the last two years prior to commencement at La Trobe.  Evidence must also include duties undertaken and a summary of the organisation.
