The Newly Positive study is conducted by the Australian Research Centre in Sex, Health and Society (La Trobe University) and is funded by the Australian Government Department of Health, Disability and Ageing.
Study context: In 1992, the first in-depth study was set up to explore the event that people attributed to their HIV seroconversion, and this program of research continues to the present day (having been hosted by various research centres and supported by a range of funders and partners over the past 33 years). Unique in the world, this series of studies has investigated the ways in which people understand and negotiate HIV risk, and has chronicled via participants’ accounts many significant developments in the epidemic. This research continues to be important in the current era, providing insights into HIV testing, PrEP uptake and discontinuation, HIV diagnosis, linkage to care, and understandings of U=U. The current study, which commenced in late 2023, includes the accounts of 46 people diagnosed with HIV in the previous 12 months.
