Research projects

Research Program 1: Tourism Psychology and Consumer Behaviour

Description:

Understanding how and why tourism consumers think, feel and behave is vital information for the formulation of effective tourism marketing, management and policy. Such information enables governments to produce appropriate policy designed to encourage the development of a prosperous tourism sector of the economy. Tourism enterprises are able to design better products, execute better marketing and promotional strategies, and satisfy consumer needs and preferences more effectively.

Example topics:

destination choice modelling, evolutionary bases of tourism consumption, risk and self-confidence in tourism behaviour

Research Program 2: Destination Competitiveness and Management

Description:

The global tourism industry is a major sector of the global economy. For many countries, international tourism represents one of the most important export industries. It is also an important source of employment. For these reasons, tourism is now a highly competitive sector of the global economy. As such, destinations (nations, states, cities, towns and regions) actively seek to maintain and strengthen their competitiveness and sustainability in an increasingly competitive tourism sector. Knowledge which helps to understand and manage such competition is therefore of considerable interest.

Example topics:

managerial models of tourism competitiveness, measurement of tourism competitiveness, tourism competitive strategy

Research Program 3: Tourism Marketing

Description:

Tourism marketing seeks to satisfy tourism consumer needs and wants through the development of tourism products and services which meet the needs of the market. Effective tourism marketing requires an analysis of consumers and competitors as well as the environment which exerts external forces on tourism organizations and enterprises. Products and services, prices, promotional activities, distribution systems, personnel decisions, etc. must act in concert for tourism marketing to function successfully.

Example topics:

online tourism marketing, cooperative marketing strategy, effectiveness of national tourism marketing programs

Research Program 4: Tourism Policy

Description:

The tourism industry involves many different stakeholders and players. Examples include government, consumers, residents, tourism enterprises, destination management organizations, related and supporting industries, suppliers, etc. Much of the tourism product is ‘free’ to consumers. Tourism consumers actually assemble an amalgam of many different elements in order to co-produce their tourism experience. Given the diverse and fragmented nature of this sector, the development of effective tourism policy to orchestrate this complex process is a major challenge.

Example topics:

tourism network analysis, consensus analysis, performance analysis, the influence of culture on organizational strategies.
