Holsworth Biomedical Research Centre

Established in 2025, the Centre unites four initiatives into one collaborative hub based in Bendigo, Victoria. Our research combines diverse expertise and advanced biomedical research with local relevance and global significance.

Transforming biomedical research into real health outcomes for regional and rural communities.

Our research

Our research is structured around three core pillars:

  • Infection and Inflammation – We study how microbiome, inflammation and immune responses affect health and contribute to disease.
  • Nucleic Acid and Genetic Disease – We explore how DNA damage, repair and non-coding RNA influence how diseases develop and how they can be treated.
  • Exercise and Behaviour Adaptation – We design and test physical and lifestyle interventions that support behaviour change and improve health outcomes.

We work with partners to turn research into real-world impact. We support early-career scientists, attract funding from from a range of sources and focus on research that benefits regional and rural communities, as well as the wider health sector.

Partner with us

We welcome partners who share our focus on advancing biomedical research. Together, we aim to improve health outcomes in regional and rural communities.

Our partners

  • Maryborough District Health Service
  • Bendigo Health
  • Inspiro Community Health
  • AFL Victoria
  • MSD Australia

Facilities

Our research facilities support cutting-edge science and real-world collaboration. They include:

  • super-resolution microscopes
  • an anaerobic chamber
  • molecular biology tools for detecting genes, pathogens and proteins
  • advanced exercise testing and prescription labs.

These facilities help us work with industry, government and community partners to turn lab-based research into real health outcomes.

Join our research team

We’re looking for outstanding researchers to join our team. If you’re curious about fundamental or applied science, contact the Centre Director, Associate Professor Brett Gordon.
